Duties and Responsibilities

The consultant will be hired under the overall guidance and supervision of the SDG Lab Director and Senior Advisor. SDG Lab shall provide the necessary support to the consultant to execute the assignment during the duration of the consultancy. These will include access to relevant documents and contacts of key people relevant to the execution of this assignment.

Specific duties and responsibilities for this consultancy include:

  1. Implement SDG Lab’s newly developed communications strategy and related plan to promote the work and impact of the Lab in view of its new vision and mission, including monitoring delivery and tracking of results.
  2. Provide ongoing strategic guidance to Director and Senior Advisor on key communications and advocacy related issues, developments, and emerging trends in communications and broader thematic areas of interest to SDG Lab.
  3. Produce and disseminate knowledge and information products of the Lab, such as policy briefs, post-event summaries, brochures, key messages, and other communication materials. Where appropriate, craft compelling narratives using storytelling techniques to engage stakeholders and other actors.
  4. Design and produce inclusive campaigns, including on the programmatic communications concept of ‘constructive hope’, to foster a strong connection between SDG Lab and internal and external partners.
  5. Advise on the best platforms for SDG Lab to achieve its communications strategy goals, particularly in view of promoting more inclusive and inter-generational dialogue and engagement especially with youth on the Lab’s new focus areas and the future of sustainability.
  6. Lead and coordinate frequent monitoring and updating of SDG Lab's social media platforms' statistics.
  7. Develop editorial and content guidelines to support the development of SDG Lab content as well as to provide guidance to external entities when partnering with SDG Lab on joint communication initiatives.
  8. Support partnership building and resource mobilization activities and integrate communications initiatives, where relevant, as part of partnership leveraging and fundraising efforts.
  9. Review social media packages from the UN Department of Global Communications and other UN and Geneva ecosystem partners and proactively disseminate relevant social media content on SDG Lab's social media channels.
  10. Preform any other tasks related to the Lab's broader strategic communications function as needed.

Qualifications/special skills

An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent degree) in project or programme management, administration, international relations, political science, social sciences, communications, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • A minimum of three years of experience in developing communications strategies and advising on marketing techniques and tactics to boost visibility, outreach, and engagement is required. • Experience in developing communications strategies with a focus on pomoting social impact and inter-generational dialogue is desirable. • Experience with partnerships, advocacy, and campaigning with a focus on community-led and issue-based activism, as well as network approaches is desirable. • Experience with storytelling for effective influencing and engagement is desirable. • Experience managing social media platforms and developing original content is desirable. • Experience in using web-based content management platforms (e.g., Webflow) is desirable. • Experience in the technical aspects of multimedia production, such as creating animated visuals, graphics, and short video clips for social media platforms is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working knowledge of the United Nations Secretariat. For the consultancy advertised, fluency in oral and written English and French is required.
