The Division of Data, Analytics, Planning and Monitoring (DAPM) was established in 2019 to drive decision making and organizational learning, improve effectiveness and achievement of results of UNICEF and its partners to realize the rights and improve the life of every child. DAPM promotes the use of data and monitoring to achieve transformative impact on lives of children.

The Division is responsible for driving, shaping and guiding UNICEF’s evidence-informed analysis, strategic planning, programme monitoring and organizational performance management. As such, DAPM enables the organization to deliver on results in a more coherent manner, based on agile and contextualized programming process, and on data, evidence, and analysis, as well as the application of human-rights based and results-based management approaches.

Within DAPM, the Data & Analytics Team (DAT) is the global go-to for data on children. It leads the collection, validation, analysis, use and communication of the most statistically sound, internationally comparable data on the situation of children and women around the world. For this purpose, both traditional and innovative data and analysis – including administrative and household survey data as well as geospatial analysis, big data and machine learning – are used. DAT upholds the quality, integrity and organization of these data and makes them accessible as a global public good on the data.unicef.org website.

DAT provides leadership, strategic and normative guidance and technical support to generate data and evidence on children. The team works together with other teams within UNICEF as well as partner organizations, to support statistical systems strengthening at the country level. DAT is also fostering a data-driven transformation in how UNICEF works internally and together with partners that includes positioning UNICEF as a leader on data for children, protecting children through governance of data and building an organization-wide culture of data.

The Statistics Officer, Health (MNCAH) will work within the Data Analysis Unit to support the statistical, monitoring and reporting work in the areas of Health (MNCAH).

How can you make a difference?

The primary function of this post is to maintain global databases of indicators, analyze and compile data, support the data architecture and development of new tools for data analysis/dissemination, and more broadly, support the monitoring of, and reporting on, the situation of children and women. The work focuses on Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescents Health (MNCAH) measurement and monitoring.

  1. Maintenance of global databases and quality assurance of data inputs
  • Support UNICEF’s focal point for MNCAH within the Health and HIV team to maintain UNICEF global databases through compilation of data from a variety of sources, including surveys and administrative sources while ensuring timeliness and quality.
  • Assist in statistical analysis of data and support the production of UNICEF publications and other reports, fact sheets, brochures, country profiles, dashboards and related materials
  • Conduct quality assurance processes including content review and fact checking of data in products generated as part of the MNCAH portfolio.
  1. Country and regional support
  • Provide technical support on reporting on prevalence and intervention coverage as required, including responding to ad hoc requests from senior management, Regional Offices (ROs), Country Offices (COs), and partner organizations
  • Liaise with COs and ROs as needed to coordinate data reporting on specific topics related to the MNCAH portfolio. Produce summary reports with compiled and available data.
  1. Methodological development and interagency partnerships/working groups
  • Contribute to the ongoing effort to harmonize the MNCAH, HIV and immunization databases
  • Provide organizational support to meetings
  • Occasionally represent UNICEF at inter-agency measurement technical meetings
  1. Further analysis
  • Contribute to further analysis of data, including microdata analysis household survey data and other type of data, development and identification of appropriate analytical methods and research questions.
  • Conduct literature reviews and summaries for use in different publications
  • Support the review of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey questionnaires, tabulation plans and other products on the MNCAH content
  1. Data dissemination and advocacy
  • Support timely updating of relevant UNICEF-related website pages for Health (MNCAH) related sections including databases, charts, references and content.
  • Support update and development of interactive data products including country profiles and dashboards

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in demography, public health, social sciences, epidemiology or statistics.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience at the national or international levels in statistical data processing, data analysis, and development/maintenance of statistical databases.
  • Proven experience analysing, compiling and presenting data, with a focus on Health (MNCAH)-related areas.
  • Proven experience in data analysis and writing to disseminate key data and findings to technical and non-technical audiences, particularly related to health (MNCAH indicators).
  • Proven experience in working with STATA or R (preferable).
  • Proven experience in working with data from household surveys in particular DHS and MICS.
  • Proven experience in conducting extensive literature reviews and summarizing findings.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
