For every child, Hope The Data, Analytics and Innovation Unit (DAIU) is located within the Division of Data, Analytics, Planning & Monitoring (DAPM) at UNICEF's New York headquarters. DAIU is the hub of UNICEF's technical guidance, quality assurance and technical data architecture for programme work on data across the organization. DAIU provides leadership, strategic and normative guidance and technical support to UNICEF's work on generating evidence on the situation of children by supporting the collection, analysis, understanding and use of robust data and statistics, programme data, data science, big data analytics and data literacy.

The Statistics Officer, Health and Immunization will work within the Data Analysis Unit to support the statistical, monitoring and reporting work in immunization and more broadly health.

How can you make a difference? The primary function of this post is to maintain global database of indicators, analyse and compile data, support the development of new tools for data collection/analysis/dissemination, and more broadly support the monitoring of, and reporting on, the situation of children and women. The work focuses on immunization and maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health measurement including HIV.

This will include:

  • Data collection, compilation, analysis, and quality assurance
  • Support UNICEF's focal points on immunization to compile data, update and maintain global databases on immunization related indicators, including from surveys, programme data, census, administrative data, and joint interagency estimates.
  • Validate immunization related data from various sources, to ensure they are of high quality and meet the key standards before inclusion into UNICEF’s databases, as well as validate data included in UNICEF publications, press releases, briefing notes, and presentations.
  • Assist in statistical analysis of immunization related data and support the production of UNICEF flagship publications and other reports, fact sheets, brochures, and related materials in collaboration with the Programme Division (PD), WHO and other partners.
  • Provide technical advice on reporting on immunization coverage as required, including responding to ad hoc requests to senior management, PD, Regional offices (ROs), country officers (COS), WHO and other partner organizations.
  • Support the HIV and maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health database work as part of the development and maintenance of the integrated health database on the data collection, compilation, analysis, and quality assurance related work. This includes equity analyses and general development database support that cuts across topics including poverty and other thematic areas.
  • Methodological development and interagency partnerships/working groups
  • Participate in the WHO-UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage (WUENIC) working group, and other data reconciliation and harmonization exercises with WHO and other partners.
  • Contribute to the on-going improvement of immunization data quality at collection stage, including through household surveys and routine programme reporting systems.
  • Support development, modification, and testing of measurement tools, where appropriate including the review and update of the Joint Reporting Form (eJRF).
  • Provide organizational support to meetings of the immunization related working groups.
  • Occasionally represent UNICEF at international meetings and other fora.
  • Further analysis
  • Support COs conduct equity and situational analysis using related data.
  • Contribute to further analysis of immunization data implementation of different studies, including development and identifications of appropriate analytical methods and mechanisms of data presentation.
  • Conduct literature reviews and summaries for use in different publications.
  • Capacity development
  • Contribute to capacity development of countries to monitor immunization coverage in collaboration with UNICEF regional and country offices.
  • Contribute to developing the capacity within UNICEF for evidence informed planning, programming, advocacy and policy development around immunization.
  • Data dissemination and advocacy
  • Support innovative ways to best serve UNICEF's in-house immunization data and information needs at country, regional and global levels.
  • Provide efficient and effective ways to prepare and disseminate products and provide input into making immunization data, analyses, and products accessible and available through different media.
  • Support updating of relevant UNICEF related website pages for immunization related indicators.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A university degree in demography, public health, social sciences, epidemiology or statistics. An advanced degree in these areas is an asset.
  • Two years of work experience at the national or international levels in statistical data processing, data analysis, and development/maintenance of statistical databases.
  • Proven experience analyzing, compiling and presenting data, with a focus on immunization, HIV or maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health areas.
  • Proven experience in data analysis and writing to disseminate key data and findings to technical and non-technical audiences, particularly related to immunization and health.
  • Proven experience in working with STATA or SPSS including code writing is an asset. Experience in R or Pythonhighly preferred.
  • Proven experience in working with data from household surveys in particular DHS and MICS and its use in policy and programming.
  • Proven experience in conducting literature reviews and summarizing main findings.
  • Proven experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Shiny (preferred), Tableau, PowerBI) an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
