Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Data Development and Dissemination Section (DDDS), Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB), Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Chief, DDDS.

Responsibilities Within assigned authority, the Statistician will be responsible for the following duties:

•Supervise and manage the entire data collection process, ensure communication with national data providers and develop data collection tools in line with quality standards and technological development. •Manage, organize, design, plan and carry out the process for collection, validation, compilation and dissemination of statistical data on drug and crime by analyzing available data sources, selecting and implementing methods for checking collected data, and selecting and implementing appropriate methods for data processing for incorporation into databases. •Manage, supervise and provide technical guidance to staff responsible for data collection and dissemination processes and organise their work efficiently. •Coordinate and contribute to the development, implementation and management of statistical databases on drug and crime, and the dissemination of these data. •Provide training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information. •Develop and revise standards on statistical concepts, definitions and classifications in the field of drug supply and demand by performing methodological research. •Prepare draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assists in drafting relevant reports. •Organize and participate in seminars, working groups and expert meetings as a technical resource person. •Supervise, manage and guide assigned staff. •Perform other work-related duties, as assigned.

Has knowledge of statistical techniques to analyze data and on tools to collect/validate statistical data. Is able to identify issues, formulate options and make conclusions and recommendations. Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field, is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data is required. Substantive experience in collecting and analysing statistical data on drug and crime and work experience at international level are desirable. Experience in the development and implementation of statistical methods for producing international estimates is desirable. Experience in the management of statistical databases and online data dissemination systems is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English, with good drafting skills is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
