Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Data Development and Dissemination Section (DDDS), Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB), Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Chief, DDDS. For more information on UNODC, please visit our website: www.unodc.org. Responsibilities Within assigned authority, the Statistician will be responsible for the following specific duties: •Organize, coordinate and ensure quality of collection, validation, compilation and dissemination of statistical data on drug-related topics by analysing available data sources, selecting and implementing methods for checking collected data, and selecting and implementing appropriate methods for data processing for incorporation into databases. •Coordinate and monitor the entire data collection process, ensure communication with national data providers and develop data collection tools in line with quality standards and technological developments. •Develop, implement and ensure methodologies for the production of comprehensive and consistent global and regional estimates on drug-related topics and variables. •Contribute to the development, implementation and management of statistical databases on drug-related topics, and the dissemination of these data. •Prepare high-quality analytical briefs on selected topics related to drugs for dissemination purposes, official reports and flagship publications. •Develop and implement capacity building activities, provide training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information. •Actively participate in the development or revision of standards on statistical concepts, definitions and classifications in the field of drugs by performing methodological research and leading consultation processes with national and international experts. •Prepare draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assist in drafting relevant reports. •Organize and participate in seminars, working groups and expert meetings as a technical resource person. •Guide and train general service staff. •Perform other work related duties, as assigned. Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology, epidemiology or related field is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data is required Substantive experience in collecting and analysing statistical data on drug-related topics is an asset. Work experience in the management of international statistical databases and the production of statistical data at international level are an asset. Experience in developing methodological statistical standards is an asset. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English, with good drafting skills is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an asset.
