Women in West and Central Africa represent the most deprived group of the population in spite of their paramount social and economic role. They have limited access to, and control over critical resources, as a result of social, cultural and economic norms. UN Women works with government partners and regional and national stakeholders to improve women’s economic participation with a focus on women’s access to the green economy; (ii) Promoting and strengthening women entrepreneurship; and (ii) Enhancing women’s income security and social protection. UN Women advise governments and regional institutions to develop gender responsive economic policies and supports capacity building of multiple actors to advocate for, formulate, and implement gender responsive economic policies.

UN Women is recruiting a project support intern to support the implementation of the women’s economic empowerment through affirmative procurement project.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Programme Specialist , the Intern for Project Support (Women's Economic Empowerment Programme) will :

  • Provide administrative support to the operational and financial management of the affirmative procurement project;
  • Support the development of project documents such as narrative reports.
  • Support the WEE team in organizing workshops, meetings, events, etc
  • Identify and document the project best practices.
  • Support the development of project knowledge products.
  • Collect the project data.
  • Provide support to the private sector engagement and partnerships initiatives.
  • Provide administrative support to resource mobilization initiatives.

Required Skills and Experience

Eligibility Requirements for the UN Women Internship Program:

Candidates applying for the UN Women Internship Program must, at the time of application, meet one of the following conditions:

  • Have no immediate family members (mother, father, sister, or brother) employed by UN Women, nor any other relatives among your supervisors.
  • Possess strong academic results and high motivation.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate-level program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have obtained a university degree and, if selected, start the internship within one year of graduation; or
  • Be enrolled in a professional postgraduate program that is part of a degree program and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Experience:

  • Strong interest and academic background in Social Sciences, International Development,Statistics, Project Management, or other relevant fields;
  • Field experience, including volunteering, field research, and other internships, is highly advantageous;
  • Work experience, including volunteering and other internships, in international development and cooperation is beneficial;
  • Experience in research on human rights issues and/or project management or other relevant fields is considered an asset;
  • Any relevant professional experience related to the functions for which you are applying will also be taken into account.

Language Skills:

  • Proficiency in French with excellent writing, research, and analytical skills is essential.

Financial Matters:

  • Internships within the UN system are subject to certain conditions which the candidate must be aware of before signing the internship agreement.
  • If the intern is financially supported by an institution, government, or third party, UN Women, subject to the rules of that institution, government, or third party, will pay the intern the difference, if any, between the external financial support provided and the applicable UN Women allowance.
  • All other costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, the relevant institution, or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will need to secure funding for living expenses and arrange travel, accommodation, and other costs.

  • A signed recommendation letter, on letterhead or from a professional email address.
  • Proof of health insurance coverage valid for the entire duration of the internship.

Additional Information on Internships at UN Women:

  • UN Women only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.
  • It is important to note that interns are responsible for organizing their own visa and residency documents and must plan this well in advance.
  • Due to the high number of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Subsequent Employment:

  • The internship program does not guarantee subsequent employment with UN Women but offers students and recent graduates from diverse academic backgrounds the opportunity to be part of a unique mandate. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
