Background

Drawing on the diversity of UNDP’s client needs and partnerships, the Office of Human Resources (OHR) is the hub for the global HR function for UNDP, providing strategy, policy setting, guidance and oversight. In addition, OHR provides a broad range of HR advisory and talent management services enabling UNDP to deliver fully integrated development solutions at corporate level. In this context, OHR is focused on the implementation of an ambitious and forward-looking three-year strategy, People for 2030, which will progressively transform UNDP’s culture and enable its workforce capacity to deliver more and better results. .

In its commitment to support the wellbeing of its workforce of over 20,000 people, serving in more than 160+ countries and in over 600 locations, BMS/OHR is increasing its capacity for addressing psychosocial and mental health needs of its personnel. This includes the provision of global psychosocial support through webinars, individual sessions, virtual group sessions for country offices and various communication and psycho-education tools. Among those, UNDP, in collaboration with WFP, has created a Wellbeing platform to help staff proactively address their mental health needs and psychosocial wellbeing. The Wellbeing Platform is a one shop stop for all questions related to wellbeing in UNDP It contains self-assessment tools, information on a range of subjects in relation to the wellbeing in the workplace, interactive exercises and information about counselling resources.

Working directly with the UNDP Staff Counsellor, the Staff Wellbeing Intern will support the implementation of the UN Mental Health Strategy across UNDP, and specifically focus on developing content, including communications, evidence-based programs and learning materials aimed at increasing personnel resilience in the field

Full or part-time for 3-6 months, the internship requires creativity, enthusiasm to learn, and motivation to empower persons with disabilities in the workplace.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assist in further developing the UNDP Wellbeing platform and website, coordinating content development with other UNDP Offices/Bureaus:

Support the editorial team with the edits and provide assistance in the area of web content development/updates by tracking changes. Coordinate with wellbeing platform stakeholders to test and monitor progress on platform and app usage. Assisting in the promotion of the platform; researching diverse print and electronic information sources for topics and materials for use in promoting mobile and desktop platform products and services. Coordinate launch event with UNDP and interagency partners.

2. Assist in researching UN-wide policies and practices in place to support personnel experiencing a mental health condition:

A repository of best practices and innovative solutions to reduce mental health stigma in the UNDP workplaces. A gap analysis of UNDP policies related to mental health and psychosocial wellbeing at work.

3. Assist the Staff Counsellors in the design, elaboration and delivery of new well-being and mental health workshops and guidelines for high-risk duty stations:

Research best practices on the delivery of psychosocial preparation for high-risk duty stations. Assist in the design and delivery of blended learning workshops for UNDP personnel in high-risk duty stations and their families.

4. Support the communication efforts and outreach related to the Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Strategy and the International Mental Health Day:

  • Draft communication related to the OHSW Strategy, with particular focus on its well-being component.
  • Plan and support the delivery and communication of activities in celebration of the international mental health day, including coordinating efforts with other agencies.
  • Attend and summarize meetings and working group on psycho-social, well-being and mental health fields.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Applicants to UNDP internships must at the time of application meet one of the following academic requirements:

  • (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • (c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Previous work experience would be advantage but not a requirement.
  • Experience in well-being and mental health promotion programmes is desirable;
  • Experience with web-based applications and websites, Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook) and web-based writing is required.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Other languages (French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese) would be an asset.

General Internships Terms & Conditions

  • UNDP Internship programme is governed by the UNDP Internship Policy Framework & Rules.
  • Under the new revised UNDP Internship Policy, UNDP will provide a modest monthly internship stipend to its interns, in accordance with the provisions of the UNDP Internship policy. All expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern or her/his sponsoring entity/institution. Stipends are available only for full-time/on-site internships at this time.
  • Selected Interns must be able to share proof of education enrolment and/ or graduation, medical/health and life/accident insurance, valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out and be able to provide insurance documentary proof at the time of their selection.
  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an Intern’s studies and learning growth. There is no expectation of employment at the end of these internships.
