Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Washington D.C., within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Strategic Communications Division (SCD), Department of Global Communications (DGC).

The UNIC Washington is the principal source of information about the United Nations system in the United States. The Information Centre is responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating UN information materials to a local audience in English; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the people it serves.

The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director and the overall supervision of the Director.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

  • Performs, under minimal supervision, the full range of office management and administrative support functions, providing direct assistance to the Director and the Deputy Director on administrative and outreach-related tasks.
  • Support the outreach work of the office, with particular focus to younger demographics and via social media and digital communication.
  • Maintains calendar/schedules, including those related to the visits of UN officials; monitors changes and communicates relevant information to appropriate staff inside and outside the immediate work unit.
  • Provides assistance in the coordination of service-wide activities (meetings, training, etc.), special projects and events, drafting background documentation, press material and other related correspondence and providing logistical support.
  • Responds or drafts responses to a wide range of correspondence and other communications; uses standard word processing package to produce a wide variety of large, complex documents and reports.
  • Responds to basic and complex information requests and inquiries (e.g. answers requests requiring file search, etc.).
  • Manages, updates, and further develops internal databases;
  • Assists in the preparation of presentation materials and the design, development and maintenance of internet applications using appropriate technology/software.
  • Provides some specialized support to unit (e.g. technology support, editing, desktop publishing, etc.), including performing backup information technology support tasks.
  • Assists in updating websites and in the preparation and maintenance of new material for inclusion in various social media platforms administered by UNIC.
  • Perform other related duties, as required.

    Education High school diploma is required.

    Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in communications, particularly digital and social media, international relations, administration, general office support or a related field is required.

    Experience utilising social media in a professional capacity; managing web site content; and providing information technology support is required.

    Experience working with the UN key counterparts in Washington, D.C., such as Government officials, experts in NGOs and the academia, private sector and media organizations is desirable.

    Experience working in an office of the UN common system or a comparable international organization is desirable.

    Experience providing support to outreach and advocacy meetings involving senior and high level officials is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

    Special Notice This position is subject to LOCAL recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.   • Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

  • This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.
