OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The office of the Regional Director (RDO) has the overall responsibility for planning, execution and evaluation of WHO health programmes at the regional level as well as for the direction and management of the supporting administrative services.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the direction and guidance of the Regional Director and direct supervision of EO RD, the incumbent will perform the following specific functions:

Collaborate strategically with technical units to draft and finalize op-ed articles on behalf of the Regional Director for daily newspapers throughout the Region and beyond, as well as more specialist online publications.

Collaborate strategically with technical units to draft and finalized speeches that are technically accurate, speak to the purpose of the engagements and the audience attending, provide clear messaging and advocacy points, and deploy effective rhetoric.

Collaborate with technical units to draft and finalize RD's message for Health Days for uploading on the website. Edit speeches for uploading to the Regional Director's webpage in a manner that reflects last-minute changes or additions, though which enhances flow and readability

Copy-edit draft speeches delivered on the Regional Director's behalf

Edit-rewrite and finalize the Regional Director's advocacy messages in collaboration with technical units to enhance readability, hone messaging and achieve uniformity of style.

Edit/rewrite and finalize forewords on behalf of the Regional Director in technical and other publications.

When a media statement on behalf of the Regional Director is planned by PIA, collaborate with technical units to draft and finalize the text and contribute quotes on behalf of the Regional Director for advocacy products created by PIA and technical units.

Complete any other tasks as assigned by the Regional Director

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University degree from recognized university in mass communication or one of the social sciences along with professional training in journalism; thorough knowledge of health and other development-related issues Desirable: Post-graduate degree in mass communication, journalism or public relations or a related field.

Experience

Essential: Five years of experience of working as correspondent /journalist; writing articles, stories and opinion editorials including some demonstrated international experience. Desirable: Experience of working with international media would be preferable.

Skills

The work would require excellent writing and editorial skills.

Essential: Expert knowledge of English. Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of UN language.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 62,120 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1910 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
