Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) in Laayoune. Under the overall guidance of the SRSG, the Special Assistant (P3) will report to the (D1) Chief of Staff.
Responsibilities Within limits of delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to, the performance of the following duties: Provide substantive and practical support to the SRSG in the implementation of the Mission's operational tasks; Keep the SRSG informed on all matters requiring his/her attention; Assist in formulating options as to how those matters might be handled and ensure appropriate follow-up, as directed by the D1 Chief of Staff. Organize and manage the SRSG’s meetings and mission events, prepare notes, Talking Points and speeches; coordinate/draft correspondence and deals with incoming and outgoing correspondence of the SRSG (code cables, statements, Note Verbales, erc). Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Mission components in particular mission support, liaise with relevant partners on coordination and policy matters; Assist with the organization and management of official visits and the substantive aspects of the SRSG’s meetings, field visits and MINURSO events, as required, prepare written summaries and conduct follow-up activities, as appropriate; Identify, analyze, and monitor implementation of existing policies and processes, both internal and external and make recommendations on possible strategies and other measures to address issues of concern and to advance mission objectives; Monitor, evaluate and report on implementation. Undertakes any special assignments as requested by the SRSG and the COS; Performs other duties as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, social science, economics, law, public administration, or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, or related field is required.
Experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required.
Experience working in a United Nations common system field operation (peacekeeping, political missions and UN agencies, funds, and programmes) -or similar international organization or non-governmental organization- in a conflict or post-conflict setting is desirable
Previous professional experience working in UN peace mission contexts is highly desirable.
Languages French and English are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French and Arabic is desirable.
Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice - This position is temporarily available for six months. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
