Org. Setting and Reporting

This Position is located in the Office of The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY). This position is based in Amman, Jordan. The incumbent will report to the Special Envoy.

Responsibilities

Within the limits of delegated authority, the Special Assistant, Political Affairs is responsible for performing the following duties: • Provides specialized advice and technical support to the office of Special Envoy in identifying, analyzing and monitoring political developments and emerging issues with respect to the implementation of the Mission's mandate. • Brings to the attention of the Special Envoy all matters requiring the Special Envoy's personal attention, makes recommendations on how those matters might be handled, and ensures appropriate follow-up as directed. • As requested, handles incoming and outgoing correspondence of the Special Envoy. • Drafts correspondence for the Special Envoy's signature, as well as other documentation including code cables and reports to the Security Council. • Liaises and maintains close working relationships with officials of state institutions, political parties, civil society organizations and religious actors. • Plans, organizes and manages conferences, meetings, seminars and workshops as directed by the Special Envoy. • Coordinates, as required, actions related to the transition towards the United Nations agency-led commitment, depending on the mission's mandate and the situation in the country. concerned. Education

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Political Science, Management or Development, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Professional training in the areas of planning, facilitation and/or coordination is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, or related extensive experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required. Experience working in a disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is desirable. At least one year of experience supporting a Special Envoy or Head of Mission in ongoing political negotiations/mediation is desirable. Experience working in the Middle East/North Africa region on political issues is desirable Experience working in or in support of a field operation of the United Nations Common System or a comparable international organization or non-governmental organization is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
