Org. Setting and Reporting This Position is located in the Office of The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria (OSE-Syria). This position is based in Geneva, Switzerland. The incumbent will report to the Chief of Staff under the overall guidance of the Special Envoy.

Responsibilities- Keeps abreast of key developments related to the mission’s work, undertakes research and prepares draft briefings, meeting notes, code cables, correspondence, and other documents on a range of topics. - Coordinates the preparation and processing of briefing materials for the Special Envoy’s meetings and official mission files, ensuring that materials from mission components are submitted in a timely manner and are of high quality. - Brings to the attention of the Special Envoy matters requiring the Special Envoy's attention, makes recommendations on how those matters might be handled, and ensures appropriate follow-up as directed. - Assists with preparations for mission travel, in coordination with the relevant colleagues and external interlocutors. Ensures the finalization and processing of the Special Envoy’s mission reports and dissemination of information to the relevant colleagues in a timely manner. - Assists in planning and organizing conferences, meetings, and workshops as directed. - Liaises and maintains collegial and close working relationship with all mission components and consult regularly with colleagues on matters of mutual interest. - Reviews and process incoming and outgoing correspondence, including communications prepared for signature by the Special Envoy. - Provides support in preparing and finalizing the mission’s work plan, monitoring and reporting, as well as budgetary processes. - Assists in recruitment processes, as directed. - Perform other duties, as assigned.

PLANNING AND ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agree strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, social science, economics, law, public administration, or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with additional qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, or related area is required.

Experience in political outreach, facilitation, advice and reporting is required.

Experience providing substantive and operational support for complex multi-stakeholder processes is required.

Experience in cross-cutting analysis and coordination including on political, humanitarian, and human rights issues is required.

A minimum of two years’ experience working in a United Nations peacekeeping operation or special political mission is required.

Experience working as a Special Assistant (or similar) to senior official in the United Nations is required.

Experience working on Syria is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
