You have:

• Currently enrolled and have attended University courses in the last 12 months inclusive of having completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated in the last 6 months in the following disciplines: International Affairs, Economics, Nutrition/Health, Agriculture, Environmental Science, Social Sciences or other field relevant to international development assistance.
• Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s degree) from a recognized university, undertaking the programmes mentioned above and have attended classes in the past 12 months.
• Fluent in English (both oral and written) is a must; knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French would be an asset.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Strong analysis, written and verbal communication teamwork and negotiating skills, resourcefulness, initiative and maturity of judgement.
• Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals.
• Proactive and able to work independently in an organized way.

The WFP Regional Bureau for Eastern and Central Africa (RBN) is based in Nairobi and provides strategic direction, technical guidance, resource mobilization and management support to WFP operations and activities in ten countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan , Sudan and Uganda.

JOB PURPOSE

WFP in East and Central Africa (RBN) is increasingly prioritising its work in support of national social protection systems, in recognition of their potential to deliver SDG2 results at scale, and as a practical means of delivering across the humanitarian and development nexus. The RBN Social Protection and Cash Based Transfer (SP&CBT) team recognizes the need to better capture regional practices and gain a more holistic understanding of programming in place across the region that contributes to social protection, including nutrition-sensitive social protection.

In many places in the region, Cash Based Transfers (CBT) are implemented on a service provision basis by other actors, including WFP, on behalf of government social protection goals. Other CBT programming is implemented as complementary to government support, furthering and increasing coverage that would otherwise not be possible.

We are seeking to fill the position of Social Protection and Cash Based Transfers Intern based in the Social Protection and Cash Based Transfers Unit of the Regional Bureau, Nairobi.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Currently enrolled and have attended University courses in the last 12 months inclusive of having completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated in the last 6 months’ in the following disciplines : International Affairs, Economics, Nutrition/Health, Agriculture, Environmental Science, Social Sciences or other field relevant to international development assistance
• Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s degree) from a recognized university, undertaking the programmes mentioned above and have attended classes in the past 12 months,

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

What you will do:

The intern will work with the RBN Social Protection (SP) & Cash Based Transfer (CBT) team:

• To undertake a mapping of social protection in the region, including government owned social protection.
• To undertake a review of current CBT service provision, and CBT based complementary programming across the region.
• Using the knowledge gathered through the CBT mapping, the intern will work with the graphic design team to produce strong templates for the creation of short ‘CBT country profile’ documents. These profiles will reflect the current status of WFP CBT programming in each country, including identifying the maturity of programming.
• Assist the SP&CBT team to strengthen the understanding and awareness of nutrition sensitive cash-based transfer programmes, by undertaking an analysis of WFP’s CBT portfolio across the region, and identifying programmes that are nutrition sensitive, as well as programmes that could become nutrition sensitive, with subsequent recommendations for action as appropriate.
• The intern would support on other tasks as required.

TRAINING AND LEARNING ELEMENTS

The intern will work closely with both the social protection and cash-based transfer specialist and will be supported to grow their knowledge and experience in these technical areas.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

• The internship programme duration is 6 months.
• Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP depending on the duty station of assignment.
• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
• WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
