Ethiopia is in northeast Africa between 3˚ and 18˚ North latitude and 33˚ and 48˚ East longitude with 1.1 million square kilometers of land area bordering Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Sudan, and Southern Sudan. The topographic features range from a high plateau with central mountains divided by the Great Rift Valley. There are 20 peaks 4,000 meters or higher with the highest, Ras Dashed in the Simien range rising 4,620 meters above sea level; the lowest point is in the Danakil Depression in Afar at 110 meters below sea level. Addis Ababa is 2330 meters above seas level. The climate varies widely, with temperatures often over 50 ˚C in the Afar depression. In the highlands the average daytime temperature is around 16 ˚C with over 1,000 millimeters falling in the rainy season. There are more than 800 species of birds including 16 endemics and extensive forested areas. The population is estimated at 115 million people; over 56 per cent under 18 years of age. There are over 80 ethnic groups, and of these Oromo and Amhara account for 34.5 per cent and 26.9 per cent respectively. In terms of religion, 43.5 per cent as Orthodox Christian and 33.9 per cent as Muslims. The capital is Addis Ababa (“New Flower”), located almost at the center of the country. Ethiopia is the largest and most populated country in the Horn of Africa. Agriculture contributes al-most half of Ethiopia’s gross domestic product (GDP). There are three types of agricultural activity. The first—and by far the most important—is the subsistence smallholder sector, which produces most of the staple grains such as teff, wheat, barley, and oats (on the cooler plateaus) and sorghum, corn (maize), and millet (in warmer areas), as well as pulses such as chickpeas, peas, beans, and lentils. Farm plots are very small, ranging from 3 to 6 acres (1.2 to 2.5 hectares). The second type of agriculture is cash cropping. Products include coffee, oilseeds, beeswax, sugarcane, and chat (qat; Catha edulis), a mild narcotic. Coffee, which is native to Ethiopia, is the single most important export. Subsistence livestock raising, the third agricultural activity, is important in the peripheral lowlands of Ethiopia. The National Bank of Ethiopia is the country’s central bank. It issues the national currency, the birr, and is also responsible for regulatory functions. There are many commercial banks, most of which are located in Addis Ababa. The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia is the largest commercial bank, with branches throughout the country.
