Overview

Support social policy and public finance analysis for UNICEF East and Southern Africa.

You have:

• Excellent oral and written skills in English.
• Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.).
• Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to meet tight deadlines.
• Experience or knowledge of data visualization is an asset.
• Experience in policy analysis, research, public administration, or data analytics is preferred.

Contract

This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

In Eastern and Southern Africa, where children under 18 make up almost half of the total population, UNICEF works with partners, communities and the private sector to ensure that children are at the heart of our actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The Social Policy team works on the analysis and advocacy of social and economic policy contexts, child poverty, public finance and social protection.

The UNV will be a valued, core and equal member of the UNICEF regional Social Policy team, supporting our work on social policy, social protection and public finance and interacting with offices across the region. The position is responsible for the following activities: 1.Supporting and leading consolidation and presentation of key regional data on social policy and analysis including public investment and budget related data. 2.Supporting research and analysis activities. 3.Supporting visualization of social policy data and information to support knowledge management on key issues, using a range of tools and approaches. 4.Ensuring regional social policy trackers are kept up to date by liaising with UNICEF country offices for regular updates. Developing various summaries and analyses from regional trackers to inform the team’s work program and engagement approach. 5.Support the development or enhancement of knowledge tools (e.g., databases, dashboards). 6.Supporting data and knowledge management for the section, including updating the external website and ensuring shared site is kept up to date and relevant. 7.Supporting organization of regional webinars. 8.Support regional specialists in collecting information for case studies, success stories, and knowledge briefs. 9.Engaging and communicating with country offices as required.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: 10.Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day). 11.Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. 12.Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities. 13.Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. 14.Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. 15.Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP. The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
