With over 850 indigenous languages and one of the most ethnically diverse populations, widespread poverty, and gender inequality make it hard for many children to realize their rights. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), UNICEF’s works effectively both ‘upstream’ (with governments) and ‘downstream’ (at the grassroots level) to carry out its mission through a programme of cooperation jointly developed with the government guides our work in the country.

How can you make a difference?

Digital media, especially social platforms, are changing the way people interact, giving rise to new and diverse audiences and empowering civil society in ways that have profound implications for communication and advocacy.

UNICEF PNG uses a number of social media platforms to raise visibility to achieve the objectives of the communication function. These include the Country Office website, Medium, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flicker and YouTube. There is need to reach and engage audiences strategically with compelling and updated content as the rapidly changing digital landscape becomes more influential in sharing news, opinion and public debate. Digital content and engagement will reinforce UNICEF’s leadership as a credible voice for and with children as well as provide a platform to encourage youth engagement on issues that matter to them.

The following tasks under the guidance and supervision of the Communication Specialist, UNICEF Papua New Guinea, will be required of the Social Media Support:

Scope of Work:

  1. Social Media Engagement
  • Manage UNICEF’s social media platforms – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube – by generating content and uploading posts on a daily basis
  • Monitor social media channels and respond to relevant social media comments by users
  • Proactively manage accounts to increase social media following for the organisation
  1. Social media content generation
  • Proactively generate social media content on a regular basis
  • Liaise with programmes to identify social media content
  • Support and implement a monthly Content Forward Plan
  • Schedule posts accordingly
  • Generate monthly reports on social media engagement
  • Promote mini social media campaigns in support of programme needs and specific events.

As a champion for every child, you will have…

  • At least two years of University level or undergraduate courses in Media Studies, Journalism, Public Relations Humanities or related fields
  • Minimum of at least three years of relevant professional (officer-level) experience in communication work with international NGO or UN
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated previous knowledge of using social media to share key messages:
  • In-depth working knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
  • High ethical standards and understanding of sensitivities pertaining to child-related/rights issues
  • Ability to research, design and execute ideas and ability to transfer knowledge and skills
  • Excellent teamwork skills (self-starter an asset).
  • Experience in social media/marketing would be an asset.
  • Experience in working in communication work for the development sector
  • Demonstrated knowledge of working with social media - Facebook, twitter and Instagram and demonstrated aptitude to quickly learn to work with social media

This position is a short-term assignment and doesn’t give rise to a long-term permanent post with the organization.

Applicants are required to include in their applications a financial proposal which includes a lumpsum amount for consultancy fees, local transportation and other miscellaneous costs. Breakdown or details of the fee will be much appreciated.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
