Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Asia and the Pacific Office geographically serves 41 countries across the region to promote and implement sustainable development solutions. It assists countries of the region pursue sustainability, particularly in their implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including technical expertise, facilitating access to finance, undertaking cutting-edge science-policy assessments, offering advisory services and strengthening laws, policies, management and governance.

UNEP works with national and local authorities, civil society, other UN organizations, research institutions and the private sector to catalyze the efficient use of the region’s natural assets and reduce the degradation of the environment.

The fast-growing wood industry in the Lower Mekong region has motivated substantial trade in stolen wood, traded illegally. China plays a key role as an export destination because of the significant domestic consumption of wood products and the size of the wood processing industry for re-export.

Rosewood is among most the trafficked group of species across China, accounting for more than a third of all seizures by value. To reverse this trend, a UN-REDD initiative on ‘Sustainable Forest Trade in the Lower Mekong Region’ was developed to tackle illegal logging and other forms of forest crimes through improved forest governance, trade and investments. The initiative supports actors in the Lower Mekong to design policies and standards for ensuring legal and sustainable timber trade.

In this context, communications campaigns are being developed to raise public awareness and incite social and behaviour change on illegal wood trade and associated forest crimes, in each of the five Lower Mekong countries including China. The campaign in China aims to reduce the consumption of and therefore demand for Rosewood, by making people care about them. The campaign will bring to the forefront of public concern the rising incidences of illegal Rosewood trade, and its negative impacts to our societies and economies. It will target urban dwellers in major Chinese cities such as Shanghai and Beijing to shift their behaviors towards buying sustainably sourced wood.

The Social Media Specialist will be responsible for implementing the social media strategy and the production of social media assets to support the implementation of campaign activities of the Lower Mekong initiative in China.
