Overview

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located in the United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) in Brussels, within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Department of Global Communications (DGC). The UNRIC Brussels is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), which are the principal source of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located. Overall, UNICs are responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating UN information materials to a local audience in local languages; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the people it serves. The UNRIC provides information services to Andorra, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, the Holy See, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The Regional Centre also provides liaison services with institutions of the European Union. To learn more about the UNRIC Brussels, visit the official website http://www.unric.org. The United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC)’s mission is to communicate the values, history and mandate of the United Nations and its actions in building a more peaceful, fair, and sustainable world. UNRIC engages with partners, civil society, media, public institutions, academia, the private sector, think thanks and the creative community. UNRIC also provides communications support to United Nations agencies located in Brussels and works together with the European Union institutions. The Centre covers 22 countries and works in 13 languages. It is organized by country and language, with nine Desk Officers covering designated areas. The intern is under the direct supervision of direct supervision of the Digital Communications Assistant or Desk Officer in the UNRIC. The social media intern's duties will include the following: - Use the UNRIC Trello Boards to assist with planning, creating, and curating content ahead of time; - Collect and collate multimedia information from different departments and organizations; - Monitor various sources for new content and information about what is happening in and around the UN on a given week; - Assist with editing and subtitling news videos for UNRIC’s social media channels, using dedicated software (such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Canva); create visuals, quote cards and other materials as requested using online tools (such as Canva or Adobe Photoshop); - Attend press conferences, meetings and events in Brussels to gather quotes and take photos and videos which can be used in social media posts; - Assisting with drafting posts for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn; - Research trends and posts from partners and suggest retweets/reposts; monitor the social media accounts for followers' comments and questions, and flag them to the team; - Take an active role in the live coverage of events taking place in Brussels; - Assist in drafting monthly reports reflecting performance of the UNRIC’s social media accounts; - Carry out other tasks as requested.​

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in one or more of the following languages is also desirable: Danish, Dutch, French, Finnish, German, Greek, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.
