Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LAC Office), located in Panama City, works closely with the 33 countries of the region and its activities are integrated into the Medium-Term Strategy and the Programme of Work approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

For UNEP, the Latin America and Caribbean region are crucial to disseminate its key messaging, flagship reports, campaigns and other strategic communications products and relevant information, in a diverse and complex region which contains not only Spanish-speaking populations, but other major languages such as English, Portuguese, and to lesser degrees, French, Dutch, creoles, native languages and others.

In this context, the UNEP LAC Office aims to reach these audiences, including specialized groups such as academics, government officials and decision-makers, youth, vulnerable and minority groups, and the citizens of the region at large with its messaging, products, campaigns and events using a distinctive regional voice and focusing on regional, country and sub-national topics relevant to these audiences. This outreach will not only provide the necessary information for citizens to be inspired, but aims to spur action on all priority areas of work for UNEP in the region.
