Communications team within the External Relations Unit

The Communications team is one of three functional teams within the External Relations Unit covering regional Resource Mobilization & Partnerships; Advocacy; and Communications at UN Women’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UN Women ROAP). The Communications team develops strategic communications products to educate, inform, mobilize action, garner interest and raise awareness of UN Women’s Regional Office Asia and the Pacific programming, priorities and activities. The Communications team manages media, UN Women’s online platforms including the ROAP website and social media platforms, and supports Country Offices with their communications efforts, building their capacity through diverse channels.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the primary supervision of the Regional Communications Specialist, the Social Media and Programme Visibility International Consultant will support the management of UN Women Asia-Pacific's social media accounts; coordinate donor visibility campaigns including developing assets and promoting them on social media; advise on communications for the UN Women Centre of Excellence for Gender Equality in the Republic of Korea; and manages the communications portfolio of the EmPower: Women for Climate-Resilient Societies project, a joint programme of UN Women and UN Environment Programme (UNEP). They also provide communications advice to the Regional Office and Multi- and Country Offices to increase their profile, deliver successful events and activities, and create high quality editorial content.

The consultant will perform the following tasks:

  • Support the management of and assess success of UN Women Regional Office Asia and the Pacific’s social media channels;
  • Collate inputs from Country/Multi-Country Offices to develop high impact donor visibility and programme materials and campaigns;
  • Provide advice on communications approaches and materials to advance the profile and reach of UN Women’s Centre of Excellence in Gender Equality in the Republic of Korea;
  • Manage the communications portfolio including web, social media and communications products for the EmPower: Women for Climate-Resilient Societies project, and joint programme of UN Women and UNEP;
  • Facilitate media relations work and requests from the media to advance UN Women’s thought leaderships and positioning amongst regional members of the press;
  • Collect quarterly results reports and manage the unit’s RMS system accountability;
  • Support the capacity of Country/Multi-Country Offices to effectively create and disseminate impactful communications campaigns.

Target Dates

Monthly Status Report provided. This report can include updates on progress in the following areas of work:

  • Manage and assess success of UN Women Regional Office Asia and the Pacific’s social media channels;
  • Capture programme impact and results for UN Women’s work through development of diverse and innovative communications products;
  • Address corporate communications inquiries from field offices on branding and guidelines;
  • Donor visibility materials and campaigns, including monitoring progress on agreed partner communications plans, review draft materials, guiding and facilitating finalization of content in line with UN Women and partners’ branding guidelines and visibility requirements and preparing inputs to UN Women’s and partners’ quarterly and annual reporting on communication and visibility activities;
  • Communications approaches and materials to advance the profile and reach of UN Women’s Centre of Excellence in Gender Equality in the Republic of Korea;
  • Web, social media and communications products for the EmPower: Women for Climate-Resilient Societies project;
  • Supports the capacity of Country/Multi-Country Offices to effectively create and disseminate impactful communications campaigns;
  • Communications support for key activities and events delivered by Regional Office Asia and the Pacific, the Centre of Excellence for Gender Equality and EmPower;
  • Develop and disseminate communication tools, updates and best practices among RO, CO and MCO and partners;
  • Produce and translate text-based and audio-visual social media assets and posts through drafting captions, taking and editing photographs and short videos for use on social platforms; feature and news articles; impact stories; e-newsletters; briefs; media kits and other relevant outreach material for ROAP social media channels and website, contributing to RO and HQ editorial series as needed;
  • Coordinate quarterly corporate communications results for RMS reporting for Monitoring and Evaluation purposes;
  • Assess media partnerships and coordinate appropriate and timely response to media inquiries;
  • Coordinate reporting on trends of social media – quality assessment/areas for improvement (social media analysis).

At the end of each month

Supervision

The consultant will work under the primary supervision of the Regional Communications Specialist. UN Women will provide the consultant with a work laptop and a workstation if the consultant is based in Bangkok. In the event that the consultant needs to travel during the consultancy for assignment-related purposes, UN Women will bear the costs of requested travel expenses.

Payments

The consultant is expected to work 20 days a month based in Bangkok, Thailand. A monthly rate will be paid upon satisfactory completion of tasks and deliverables that will be summarized in a monthly report. UN Women will cover travel and related visa and terminal fees for Thailand duty station

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional work experience at the national and/or regional level in communications and related fields.
  • Experience in communications to advance gender equality and partnerships building in the international development context.
  • Experience coordinating and liaising with government agencies and/or donors is an asset.
  • Experience within the UN system desirable.

Language requirement:

  • Fluency in English.

  • Working knowledge of another official UN language is as asset.
