Adolescent Development and Participation (ADAP)

In Malaysia, 5.5 million adolescents aged 10-17 make up the country’s 32 million population. Whilst Malaysia has experienced rapid economic and social development over the last 20 years, a myriad of social, economic and health factors continue to undermine the ability of adolescents to reach their full potential. Adolescents and young people should have access to opportunities to develop skills for learning, personal empowerment, employability, and active citizenship to enable them as change makers which can contribute to eliminating Malaysian society’s greatest challenges.

Engaging adolescents and youth have long been a part of UNICEF’s mandate, as participation is a right and one of the guiding pillars of the Convention on the Rights of a Child (CRC). UNICEF Malaysia’s Country Programme Document (CPD) 2022 – 26, includes a dedicated output for adolescent development and participation, recognizing the importance of second decade programming. The engagement and participation of adolescents and youth is also an important strategy to deliver results across all areas of UNICEF’s work. UNICEF’s Strategic Plan 2018-2021 highlights “adolescent empowerment” as a key Result Area and “young people and children as change agents” as one of the Change Strategies.

Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC)

UNICEF has used the power of communication to promote child survival, development, protection, and participation. One of the core strategies in doing so is through Communication for Development (C4D), also known as Social and Behavior Change Communication.

C4D is a systematic, planned and evidenced-based strategic process that applies social and behavioural science to promote the adoption of positive behaviours in a community. It is a two-way participatory process which listens to individuals and communities to understand how they make decisions to design policy and interventions which meet their needs for better social outcomes.

It is within this context that UNICEF is looking for two interns (one for ADAP unit and another for C4D unit) to provide a young person’s perspective to UNICEF programming and Social Behaviour Change for young people. Both interns will be contracted for a period of 6 months in 2022. We offer day-to-day supervision, career guidance, exposure and participation to UNICEF programme planning and implementation, and the opportunity to work WITH and FOR EVERY CHILD.

How can you make a difference?

Two interns will be recruited, where one intern is required to support the Adolescent Development and Participation (ADAP) programme and another intern for Communication for Development (C4D) programmes. Both interns will be under the day-to-day supervision of the Head of Section for ADAP and C4D.

Support in cross-sectoral work with other UNICEF programme sections (i.e. Child Protection, ADAP, and Environmental Sustainability) on awareness raising campaigns, design of IEC materials, and online/offline activities to promote behaviour change.
