Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is located in Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work and the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and persons marginalized from society and development. The Division intends to recruit two interns to support the Programme on Ageing Section (PAS) within the Social Inclusion and Participation Branch (SIPB) of the Division. The intern works under the supervision of and reports to the Chief of the Programme PAS/SIPB. Tasks may include, but are not limited to: •Assisting with the organization of, and providing support to, the 14th session of the General Assembly Open-ended Working Group on Ageing (20 to 22 and 24 May 2024). •Assisting with the organization of side events at the 14th session of the General Assembly Open-ended Working Group on Ageing (20 to 22 and 24 May 2024). •Assisting with the organization of and providing support to the observance of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (15 June 2024). •Assisting with organization of the observance of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons (1 October 2024). •Conducting research in the areas of interest to the Section and its role as Chair of the United Nations Inter-Agency Group on Ageing. •Assisting with preparation of materials to be posted on the website and social media platforms. This internship is designed to be full-time. Duties will be carried out in a hybrid manner (both at UNHQ in New York several days per week, as well as telecommuting from within the duty station). The internship will begin with an initial duration of 2 months, with the opportunity of an extension for up to a total of 6 months.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
