Background:

NRC has been active in Somalia since 2004 with four area offices in Kismayu, Mogadishu, Garowe and Hargeisa, providing protection and humanitarian assistance to refugees, internally displaced persons and returnees in Somaliland, Puntland, South Central and Jubbaland regions. NRC offers a comprehensive response for returnees and IDPs of high need, addressing their food security, livelihood, shelter, education, ICLA, and water, hygiene and sanitation needs and also responding to emergencies through NRC’s five core competences: Shelter, Education, Food Security and Livelihoods, WASH and Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA).

In response to the ongoing emergency response, NRC is setting up roster for programme roles that area office could use. We are seeking highly qualified, resilient, dynamic professionals to respond to the emergency and support affected people.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Assessment on site needs and resources, existing well and latrine types, data on community intended to be benefitted.
  2. Beneficiary selection. Identify vulnerable families eligible for assistance for well construction according to established selection criteria.
  3. Site selection. Asses, analyzse and finalize the well digging locations/villages in consultation with community.
  4. Arrange community meetings and explain them roles and responsibilities of water committees
  5. Train water committee on maintenance of water facilities and provide on job training
  6. Check the quality of well digging done by community (community contribution) and contractor at different stages.
  7. Responsible to install hand pumps for all drilled/dug wells in consultation with logistic department
  8. Coordinate with logistic department for delivering hand pumps to the sites
  9. Contribute in designing latrine, water supply and sanitation related activities and define Bill of Quantities (BOQ) of infrastructures and prepare all technical drawings actively in preparing and conducting assessment survey to control progress of program and efficiency of activities
  10. Ensure the inclusion of cash-based interventions and marked based programmes in country and area-based strategies and their implementation across and within NRC’s core competencies
  11. Support Emergency Manager & area CC Coordinators to prioritize the emergency activities in different regions such as field assessments, distribution, responses, PDM, risk monitoring

Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Water Engineering, electric engineering, Civil Engineering, Public health, Community development, Geology or any related discipline.
  • At least two to three years in design and implementation of Water and Sanitation schemes projects
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, WaterCAD or any civil works design software is highly desirable
  • Experience from working with WASH and Shelter projects in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Knowledge of English
