The Opportunity – Shelter Assistant

Post location: Gaza Field Office - Rafah and subject to change based on SC priorities and response in Gaza.

Contract Duration and Level of Effort: until 31st December 2024, with a possibility of extension based on available funds.

ROLE PURPOSE:

The Shelter Assistant will generally be deployed as a field level assistant in a large-scale emergency programme. The Shelter Assistant will be expected to support the Shelter team whenever there are sectoral assessments, any project planning exercises and supporting during procurement etc, recruitment and procurement at various levels.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Shelter Coordinator

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

· Assist to Shelter Coordinator in planning and implementing shelter/NFI activities.

· Organize distributions of NFIs and Shelter activities, monitor and supervise enumerators

and field contractors – ensuring attendance is tracked and staff are remunerated as

required, coordinating closely with HR and Finance teams.

· Facilitate and coordinate the verification process both on the ground or through telephone

– ensure verification forms are completed fully and correctly, supporting the field team to

correct errors.

· Support to identify the communities, camps or location for shelter kits distribution.

· Support to prepare beneficiary list, to identify distribution locations and consult with key

stakeholders to find the appropriate date for distribution of shelter items.

· Produce daily, weekly and quarterly progress reports, provide accurate data analysis and

related updates.

· Maintain positive relationships with beneficiaries, community leaders and local authorities

to facilitate SCI’s work in target areas.

· Assist in any additional administrative duties as required for the project.

Capacity Building:

· Identify learning and training opportunities for project staff and work as a mentor and role

model for less experienced staff.

Representation & Advocacy & Organisational Learning:

· Ensure that Save the Children's work is coordinated with efforts of other agencies and

Government, and support Interagency Coordination forums, advocating for the specific needs

of children. This may involve supporting coordination working groups.

· With support from the lead Shelter Adviser and/or other senior programme staff, assist in

advocacy activities that target decision-makers in-country.

· Contribute to communications and media work as required.

General:

· Deliver high quality results in line with the terms of reference agreed in advance – to do this in

a way which maintains the reputation of the Humanitarian Department.

· Comply with Save the Children policies and practice with respect to child safeguarding, code of

conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.

· To perform such other responsibilities as agreed with your line management.

In order to be successful, you will bring/have:

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

· Minimum of bachelor’s degree in engineering, Science or related field.

· At least 2-3 years of experience in the field.

· Cross cultural awareness and insight into multi-programming issues.

· Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions with limited supervision.

· Flexibility and ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations.

· Ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively.

· Creative and able to work with limited resources.

· Team player and strong communication skills, both oral and written.

· Honest, hardworking and committed to community development.

· Proficient in computer applications, especially with MS Word and MS Excel. MS

PowerPoint is a plus.

Desirable

· Language skills in Arabic and other local languages

· Experience or knowledge of working and living in relevant regions/contexts

· Specific experience of designing and managing major donor projects

· Knowledge of consortia working
