Org. Setting and Reporting The position is located in the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG). The Inter-agency and policy Officer reports to the Deputy Director of the Sustainable Development Unit.

Background:

The Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) supports the Secretary-General, through the Deputy-Secretary-General, to leverage and strengthen the UN system’s various assets and footprint to advance the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In the context of overlapping crises, including but not limited to the climate emergency, protracted conflicts and the COVID-19 pandemic and under the Decade of Action for the delivery of the SDGs, SDG accelerated implementation demands more than ever global solidarity, ambition and purpose to act collectively, decisively and early to save lives and restore livelihoods, while keeping us on track towards longer-term objectives, building a sustainable and inclusive economy.

The Sustainable Development Officer will play a crucial role in supporting EOSG to ensure that the UN System, together with partners deliver the expected results on the SDGs in a coordinated and coherent manner. The Sustainable Development Officer will play a key role in identifying and addressing capacity gaps for SDG accelerated implementation.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Sustainable Development Officer Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Leads the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects on sustainable development issues; supports project on sustainable development; Leads review of relevant documents and reports; identifies priorities, problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and initiates follow-up actions in addressing capacity gaps for SDG accelerated implementation.
  • Coordinates and reviews the assessments of sustainable development issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or research activities and studies and leads research on the identification of new and emerging sustainable development issues and presents analysis of information gathered and reviewed from diverse sources with plausible recommendations.
  • Undertakes survey initiatives; guides design of data collection instruments; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
  • Supervises preparation of various written outputs, including background papers, analysis, substantial sections of reports and studies, and inputs to publications on sustainable development issues.
  • Provides direct substantive support to consultative and intergovernmental meetings, including conferences, by offering strategic advice, giving technical guidance and assisting in developing a consensus, including proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations on sustainable development issues.
  • Assists with the preparation of planning documents, presentations to meet training needs, talking points and speeches on sustainable development issues.
  • Manages outreach activities; designs and conducts training workshops, seminars, etc., gives lectures or presentations on assigned topics/activities on sustainable development issues.
  • Oversees web contents and structure for the areas of his/her responsibilities.
  • Leads projects, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties, including drafting summaries on sustainable development issues.
  • Supports the department in providing materials to develop and maintains relations with senior officials of member governments and ensures a response to request for advice and/or capacity development on sustainable development issues and policies, including leading capacity development.
  • Provides, develops and reviews from a capacity development perspective, policy documents and background materials, as they relate to sustainable development, in particular in those areas of priority identified under the SDU workplan.
  • Participates and advocates for capacity development and capacity development solutions in inter-agency or expert task forces or working groups either internally or with outside parties linked to the Sustainable Development Unit{s areas of work..
  • Supports the roll-out of Special Initiatives of the Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General.
  • Supports SDU Director’s engagement in EOSG Coordination and EOSG Directors Meetings.
  • Acts as EOSG Focal Point for the Secretary General’s Initiatives on topics designated under his/her responsibility, ensuring regular reporting on the activities.
  • Performs other duties pertinent to the work of the Sustainable Development Unit as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in sustainable development, economics, public policy, public administration, international relations, political science, finance, law, social sciences or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, policy-oriented work in a broad range of international affairs and sustainable development issues is required.

Knowledge of capacity development and training methodologies is desirable.

Knowledge of capacity building of complex issues is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required;
