- Fluency (level C) in English language.
- Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language, Arabic is an advantage.
- Experience in creating and cultivating relationships with key stakeholders including NGOs, national authorities, UN agencies, donors and academia.
- Solid understanding or experience of working with or in international financial institutions.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and build multi-functional and cross-geography teams.
- Proven ability to develop quality reports and analysis.
- Knowledge of food security is desirable.
- Experience in the Middle East and/or North Africa and ability to speak Arabic is preferable.

Background and purpose of the assignment: The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.
WFP’s Regional Bureau in Cairo (RBC) provides strategic guidance, policy/technical support, and oversight to WFP’s operations in 13 countries across the Middle East, North Africa and Europe/ Central Asia: Algeria, Armenia, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and Yemen. WFP is seeking a senior economist or a motivated, talented individual with comparable expertise in research and data generation to help RBC to strengthen its analytical and evidence capacity. This role is particularly suitable for candidates with extensive experience in the region. Arabic language would be a strong advantage.
Job Purpose: This position will provide strategic leadership in research and data management to ensure that reliable and up-to-date evidence is available to inform WFP’s portfolio of work. The role will require leading an international team to analyse the external environment in which WFP operates, to build scenarios relating to issues that drive hunger across the region and to lead analysis of the overall effectiveness of WFP’s response through measurement of results. The position will be under the direct supervision of the regional Head of Programme.
Main tasks and responsibilities: The Senior RAM lead will be responsible for the following areas: 1. Emergency food needs assessments • Provide strategic advice and leadership to WFP country offices (COs) in the region to gauge food assistance needs at the right time to make key decisions for any response, including emergency situations. • Support COs to manage all requirements for assessing and mapping needs. This includes managing staff that manage visual geographic presentation of WFP’s data through Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI).
2. Economic and market analysis • Oversee and lead economic analysis for WFP at regional level, guiding the Regional Office to predict and manage foreseeable risks relevant to food security • This may include early warning for economic shocks to support Governments in different contexts, including, for example, through adjustments to national social protection systems
3. Respond to other data needs as required • This may include nutrition assessments, targeting vulnerable households for assistance, helping to assess the impact of climate change and helping WFP to think through new programming challenges, for example increasing livelihoods work in urban areas. • The post-holder will also lead support to COs to monitor outcomes of programmes that WFP is delivering across the region.
4. Partnership and representation: The post-holder will be expected to enhance WFP’s leadership role in food security analysis by representing WFP in meetings with strategic partners, contributing to high-level technical discussions, exchanging knowledge and experience with other institutions and identifying areas of comparative advantage in both emergency and non-emergency settings.
5. Effective staff management: The post-holder will be expected to • Lead, motivate and manage a geographically diverse team of staff • Provide coaching and guidance to ensure appropriate career development and enable high performance • Build relationships and collaborate closely across the programme team and with other divisions, regional bureaux and country offices as required. • Ensure that gender perspectives will be incorporated in all areas of assessment and analysis.
6. The post-holder will be expected to perform other duties as required.
Specific qualification and Experience required: Work experience & skills • Minimum of 11 years of relevant professional work experience in a relevant field • Solid understanding or experience of working with or in international financial institutions. • Experience in creating and cultivating a broad range of relationships with key stakeholders including NGOs, national authorities, UN agencies, donors and academia. • Demonstrated ability to lead and build multi-functional and cross-geography teams and to collaborate with others to achieve collective results. • Ability to deliver results through efficient planning and organization and by enabling more junior colleagues to excel. • Proven ability to develop quality reports and analysis.

• Experience in the Middle East and/or North Africa and ability to speak Arabic is preferable.

Terms and Conditions International Professional positions are open to all nationalities. The selected candidate will be employed on a fixed-term contract with a probationary period of one year.
Mobility is and continues to be a core contractual requirement in WFP. After completing this assignment, you will be expected to apply internally for other assignments in WFP.
