Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. A key agreement opened for signature at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention has three objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal, Canada and is administered by UNEP. This post is located in the Secretariat of the CBD, within the Implementation Support Division, (ISD), Monitoring Review and Reporting Unit (MRR). Under the general guidance of the Director of the Implementation Support Division and the direct supervision of the Head of the MRR Unit, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:

Responsibilities

A. Supports processes related to the National Reports (NRs), National Biodiversity Strategy Action Plans (NBSAPs) and Biodiversity Strategy Action Plans (BSAPs) prepared by regional (international) bodies, subnational and local governments, cities, including maintaining this information on the CBD website and associated databases: a) Ensures quality control for all reports submitted by countries. Follows up as necessary with national focal points (NFP) and other national authorities on matters related to compliance. b) Ensures that all newly received reports are posted online with associated information and prepares formal communications to countries to acknowledge the reports. c) Compiles information on NRs and NBSAPs, including contributing the production of summaries related to the content. B. Contributes to the further development of the CBD website and other CBD branded products, featuring improved content and appearance: a) Creates and/or updates/maintains webpages related to the work of the Unit, including content for biodiversity country profiles. b) Provides guidance to the work on uploading of NBSAPs, national targets and national reports in the Online Reporting Tool and Clearing-House Mechanism. c) Serves as a focal point for PMRR Unit in the NBSAP Forum and provides guidance to external partners related to web content and design of joint web-based platforms. C. Provides general support for the work on planning, monitoring, review and reporting, including meetings and events: a) Leads the logistical and organizational support for various meetings, including NBSAP regional dialogues and workshops. b) Coordinates with SCBD experts as necessary to ensure the Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC), women and youth and substantive experts are included. Handles communication with workshop nominee and participants related to logistical arrangements. c) Assists with the development of CBD e-learning modules or training materials. d) Supports online meetings and communication, including by establishing list serves, shared folders, scheduling meetings. e) Supports the development of substantive documents, agendas and other information related to the general work activities of the Unit, and in relation to meetings and events. D. Supports CBD meetings, including Conference of the Parties (COP) and its subsidiary bodies and working groups: a) Contributes to document preparation for CBD meetings. b) Contributes to the development of choreos. c) Provides Secretariat support as needed during formal meetings. d) Performs other duties as assigned. E. Data Strategy a) Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. b) Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.

Education

Completion of secondary school education is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

Knowledge of MS office software is required. Additional skills and training in written communication, management information systems (MIS) and web design are desired. Supplemental training related to project management is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant working experience as a programme, research or administrative assistant is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to eight (8) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Experience working in a research institute, university or specialized organization is required. Experience with the United Nations or a similar international organization is desirable. One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Good working knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of an additional UN language is desirable. NOTE: "fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and " Knowledge of" equals a rating of " confident" in two of the four areas.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
