Overview

Provide technical support for geospatial analysis and food security monitoring.

You have:

  • University degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computer science or relevant field, OR First University degree with related work experience.
  • Fluency in English and working knowledge of a second UN language (preferably French, Spanish or Arabic) is considered an asset.
  • Minimum five years of relevant professional experience in Geographic Information Systems.
  • Minimum two years professional postgraduate experience in geospatial analysis, information management, or environmental analysis.
  • Experience working with GIS software ArcGIS, Quantum-GIS and other open-source software is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of spatial analysis techniques.
  • Experience in collaborative work with governments, UN agencies, and key stakeholders in food and nutrition security.
  • Competencies in the use of statistical software such as SPSS, STATA, R, Tableau, Power BI will be an asset.

WHY JOIN WFP SOMALIA?

In Somalia, the World Food Programme provides food assistance for nutrition, livelihoods, and relief through the hard work of more than 618 employees who contribute towards making Somalia hunger free in close partnership with local partners.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

  • Provide technical support in geospatial mapping and remote sensing analysis for evidence-based food security and nutrition surveillance and monitoring (WFP activity mapping, hazard mapping, disaster risk assessment, and exposure analysis) aligning with WFP standards, and contribute to timely reporting of WFP initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of VAM initiatives and activities, plans and processes, while ensuring compliance with WFP policies and guidance.
  • Support the development of systems and tools for the monitoring and assessment of food assistance needs in line with innovative methodologies and best practice.
  • Assistance and guiding in the coordination of data gathering and monitor the data collection systems, ensuring rigorous quality standards are maintained.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders (internal and external) to monitor ongoing projects, ensuring effective collaboration, timeliness and efficiency and highlight potential risks for project delivery.
  • Support in the design and maintenance of digital platforms for data analysis and data visualizations, including geospatial analysis, to support programme activities and provide background for decision-making and planning (using, e.g., MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Tableau, Power BI, ArcGIS).
  • Support capacity building for WFP staff, partners and national government in conduct vulnerability analysis and geospatial systems to inform effective preparedness and responses.
  • Participate in relevant coordination and technical forums with Government, agencies and partners ensuring WFPs views are represented and for exchange of information and joint initiatives.
  • Acting as a point of referral and supporting staff, especially the area and field offices staff with analysis and queries on the areas of expertise.
  • Act in an assigned emergency response capacity as required to meet emergency food assistance needs.
  • Perform other duties as required.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: University degree, preferably in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computer science or other relevant fields, OR First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses is required.

Language: Fluency in English, working knowledge (level B) of a second UN language will be considered as an asset (preferably French, Spanish or Arabic). Somali language is an asset.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

  • Profound experience working with GIS software ArcGIS, Quantum-GIS and other Open-Source software knowledge is an asset.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in Geographic Information Systems. Minimum two years professional postgraduate experience in the field of geospatial analysis, information management, environmental analysis, statistical analysis.
  • Experience in collaborative work with governments, other UN agencies and key stakeholders in food and nutrition security.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • knowledge of main GIS software: ArcGIS, QGIS, another Open-Source software knowledge is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of spatial analysis techniques.
  • Advanced GIS and geodatabase management skills.
  • Familiarity with spatial databases and establishment of cloud-based SDI.
  • Experience in emergency contexts and flexibility to travel at short notice is desirable.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and understanding of WFP vulnerability mapping systems and emergency assessment standards is an asset.
  • Strong ability with Office365.
  • Competencies in the use of statistical software such as SPSS, STATA, R, Tableau, Power BI etc will be an asset.
