- Ability to conduct independent research on economic and trade questions
- Proficiency in one of the AU working languages (Arabic, English, French, Kiswahili, Portuguese, and Spanish) is mandatory and fluency in another AU language is an added advantage

Purpose of Job
Within its core mandate of coordinating the African group activities and representing the African Union in Geneva, the African Union Permanent Representation in Geneva is looking for a senior trade and economic officer that will oversee Economic and Trade issues.
Main Functions
Under the direct supervision of the Permanent Representative, the Senior Policy Officer – Trade and Economy shall: • Provide support in the preparation and implementation of programmes developed out of the Mission’s strategic plan • Ensure effective coordination and implementation at various levels • Liaise with stakeholders on relevant matters; • Support AU Member States in articulating common positions on trade-related matters, particularly in WTO and UN committees and working groups; • Prepare and develop reports, budget and work programmes related to the functional work area; • Provide support to develop resource mobilization strategy with stakeholder’s coordination, as applicable; • Manage and supervise employees with regard to work organization and implementation, as and when assigned and in the absence of the Permanent Representative; • Conduct complex analysis and generate accurate reports in a timely manner for the Mission’s and AU’s internal use; • Liaise with the various Departments/Directorates/Offices/Units of the Commission for coordination and alignment purposes; • Participate in the preparation of budgets for the respective area of work or the Mission in general in accordance with relevant frameworks; • Support the promotion of the activities of the Mission including preparing leaflets, guidelines and fact sheets as may be required; • Actively contribute in the development of strategies, policies, programmes and plans of the Mission.
Specific Responsibilities
• Coordinate the activities of the Permanent Delegation on thematic related to trade and economy • Provide support to the activities of the Permanent Delegation on trade and economic issues • Provide technical analysis and position documents for the defence of African group interests on trade and economic matters • Participate in African Group, WTO and UN meetings and report • Promote African candidatures in the international system • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned or required.
Academic Requirements and Relevant Experience
• Masters in Economics, Trade or related field with minimum seven (7) years work experience, out of which three (3) should be at expert level OR • Bachelor Degree with minimum ten (10) years relevant work experience, out of which three (3) should be at expert level.

TENURE OF APPOINTMENT:
The appointment will be made on a regular term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months shall be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

REMUNERATION:
Indicative basic salary of US$ 37,453.00 (P3 Step 1) per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. Post adjustment (64% of basic salary), Housing allowance US$ 31,003.20 (per annum), and education allowance (100% of tuition and other education-related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$ 10,000.00 per child per annum), for internationally recruited staff and a maximum of $3,300 per child per annum for locally recruited staff.
