1- An assessment report on the recent macroeconomic and regional trend and geopolitical events including SWOT analysis and related empirical assessments of the effects of the recent macroeconomic trends on Oman’s economic growth and the Plans’s five objectives. 2- A report on the sector diversification in Oman.

Duties and Responsibilities

Background:

ESCWA is initiating a series of activities that underscores ESCWA’s commitment to enhancing financial frameworks and bolstering sustainable development efforts in the region. ESCWA strives to support policy makers and national stakeholders by offering a range of dynamic and interactive tools to assist in the design of integrated national financing strategies, support the transition to SDG-centric financing, and advance the implementation of national sustainable development strategies, plans and macroeconomic frameworks. This aligns with the scope of the UN Development Account project entitled “Towards Integrated National Financing Frameworks”.

Within this context, ESCWA is conducting an evaluation of the financial, fiscal, and financing aspects associated with achieving the indicators, objectives, and national goals of the 10th NDP and Vision 2040 in Oman. It focuses on monitoring and tracking available financing sources, including public, private, local, international, and innovative options. The activity seeks to simulate various funding paths, calculate savings from financing decisions, and enhance the developmental impact of the government budget. This comprehensive assessment considers the connectivity of financing sources, both local and international, and evaluates their impact on the plan's objectives and the overarching vision for Oman's development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1- Evaluate the effect of the recent developments in the world and in the region on Oman’s economic growth and on its tenth five-years strategic plan’s objectives. a. Review analytically recent macroeconomic and geopolitical developments in the world through a SWOT analysis and related empirical assessments of the implications of these developments on Oman’s five objectives and analyze the impact of these developments on Oman’s economic growth. 2- Evaluate the diversification goal and the contribution of the private sector in achieving Oman’s strategic objectives and their contribution in achieving economic growth. a. Apply a methodology to evaluate the diversification in Oman’s economic landscape and compare it with the above results (pending availability of data).

Qualifications/special skills

A Master’s degree or higher in economics, finance, econometrics or related area is required.

All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 5 years of professional work experience in quantitative research or statistics on topics related to finance, economy or related fields is required. Excellent analytical, research, writing and communication skills is required. Proven record of published items covering the topics of economic and finance is required. Experience in managing data and proficiency in statistical reporting is desirable. Experience in econometrics is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.

For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required.

Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
