Office/Unit/Project Description:

The Office of the UNSGSA, supports the work of H.M. Queen Máxima of the Netherlands as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA). As UNSGSA and Honorary Patron of the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI), Queen Máxima raises awareness and advocates specific policies, investments and actions with governments, regulators, private companies, international institutions and diverse additional stakeholders, all with view of how inclusive financial systems can help to reduce poverty, equalize opportunity and accelerate progress toward numerous development goals. She does so through country visits, speeches, meetings, convening of stakeholders and other outreach. This requires careful, comprehensive and rigorous analysis of local conditions, policies, available services and public priorities, as well as the needs of households, enterprises and communities.

The UNSGSA’s work is done is partnership with international stakeholders to advance financial inclusion. She collaborates closely with an advisory Reference Group of leading international organizations including the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Better Than Cash Alliance, Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP), The World Bank Group (including the International Finance Corporation), the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Flourish Ventures. The UNSGSA also consults widely with UN country teams, financial standard setting bodies (SSBs), the G20/Global Partnership for Inclusive Finance (GPFI), foundations, private companies, bilateral donors, and civil society organizations.

Under the supervision of the Communications Specialist, Office of the UNSGSA, the Editor/Writer will provide editorial and communications support for UNGA, the UNSGSA Annual Report, as well as help writing and editing speeches, newsletters, news stories, social media, and other communications materials.

Institutional Arrangement

The Editor will report directly to the Communications Specialist of the Office of the UNSGSA

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Annual Report: Support the planning, drafting and editing of the UNSGSA Annual Report, produced annually from March – September each year.
    • The drafting process involves writing compelling stories on technical topics and events from initial input provided by office policy advisors and communication advisor.
    • Report averages 40-44 pages in length and involves several rounds of proofreading and editing. Photomining support may be needed.
  • Carry out year-round editorial support for communications, reports, and external publications on technical financial inclusion content.
  • Support the office’s communication activities, including by producing news stories, social media content, and timely updating content on the UNSGSA website as needed.
  • Support the preparation and editing of quarterly UNSGSA newsletters for external communications if needed.
  • Occasionally provide communications support during and following major engagements, including the UN General Assembly and others (if needed).
    • On-site event communications support during UNGA and other events, if needed.
    • Editorial support post-events, including news stories, social media, photo caption/creation/editing, e-newsletter creation.

Required Skills and Experience

Min. Academic Education

Masters degree in Writing, Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Education, or other related fields.

Min. years of relevant Work experience

Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in editing, writing, proofreading, including significant experience with print publications in English..

Required skills and competencies

  • Demonstrated experience in writing and editing related to financial inclusion for international organizations and/or high-level projects in English.
  • Experience in the creation of information graphics/data visualizations.
  • Excellent research and proofreading skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent time-management skills. Capacity to prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines, even in imperfect conditions, and thrive as part of a small fast-moving team.

Desired additional skills and competencies

  • Experience working with high-level representational offices and/or the United Nations preferred. Experience working for organizations that work on financial inclusion with policymakers and regulators.
  • Familiarity with the UNSGSA work
  • Familiarity with publishing content to websites and content management systems
  • General knowledge in the field of inclusive financial systems and the digital economy
  • Experience in editing annual reports for digital and print publications. Experience working closely with designers to execute layouts.
