JOB TITLE: Senior Data Science Associate TYPE & LEVEL OF CONTRACT: Service Contract, SC7 UNIT/DIVISION: Technology DUTY STATION (City, Country): Regional Bureau in Cairo (RBC), Cairo, Egypt REPORT TO: Regional Data Coordinator DURATION OF CONTRACT: 1 year Note: Egyptian nationals/citizens or candidates with valid Egyptian work permit / residency are eligible to apply. This vacancy will also be used to build a roster for similar positions in WFP Egypt.

JOB PURPOSE

WFP Technology Division (TEC) is the digital business engine of the World Food Programme, providing the business with multi-pronged and resilient technical capabilities able to respond with the agility required in humanitarian operations. Technology and connectivity are rapidly reaching some of the most vulnerable people and places affected by crisis, but they are also increasingly expanding to the services responding to those same crises. As one of the main humanitarian actors, WFP has the opportunity and the obligation to leverage data and technology to better know and serve those in need by digitally transforming the way it works.

The job holder will be based and working for WFP Regional Bureau for Middle East, Norther Africa and Eastern Europe (RBC) which is located in Cairo. RBC provides strategic direction, technical guidance, resource mobilization and management support to WFP operations and activities in different countries in the region.

The Purpose of this job is to support the delivery of professional, client-focused data services, The job holder will be part of Data Service Team, within RBC TEC Unit, contributing in the delivery and implementation of data integration, analysis and visualization projects across field operations within RBC region.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Responsibilities:

  • Responds to requests for exploration, identification, and acquisition of data sources to determine their suitability for use in decision making and advancing the goals of the organization. Leads other team members to prepare input to address requests.
  • Maintains a working relationship with key clients to leverage the use of data science methods to support their programmatic areas through solutions built by the team and by establishing communication channels through meetings, email and other means.
  • Provides input to the design and development of data science products to reveal insights and provides an understanding or knowledge of the data that would otherwise not be detected without the application of analytical methods such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, predictive analytics, data and text mining, natural language processing, statistics, and use of relevant algorithms and computational approaches.
  • Provides client training and develops products, tools and processes to extend the capabilities of WFP Country offices.
  • Prepares customized visualization and presentation products to reveal the findings of analysis for clients utilizing WFP standard tools such as Tableau.
  • Build and strengthen the capacity of data visualization in RBC by organizing and facilitating trainings.
  • Ensure adherence to WFP policies regarding data, including data privacy, security, management, and code documentation.
  • Participate in field missions as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work implies frequent interaction with the following:

  • Staff at various levels throughout the Organization.
  • Specialized agencies and national governments.
  • Frequent travel to WFP operations is the region is expected.

  • Provides consistent, accurate and comprehensive data assistance in order to accomplish current work programme needs.
  • Independently provides accurate, well organized reports and/or records. Interprets and applies guidelines to achieve specific outputs.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Sciences, Information Systems, Data Management, Electrical/Computer Engineering or another related functional area is essential.

Experience: Five years of experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management, or related area is essential.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Working knowledge in predictive modelling, machine learning and applied statistics is required.
  • Comprehensive analytical skills and advanced level of knowledge in any of the following tools: Palantir Foundry, Tableau, PowerBI, Python, PySpark, R and Excel.
  • Sound knowledge of Relational Database (MS-SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, etc.).
  • Proficient with SQL, database design, and database packages such as SQL Server and MySQL.
  • Intermediate level experience of business intelligence tools such as Tableau, Micro Strategy, or others.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel.
  • Hard worker and fast learner.
  • Able to work under pressure.
  • UN experience preferred.

Languages: Fluency in oral and written communication in both English (level C) and Arabic.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

WFP offers a competitive compensation package including:

  • The gross salary for SC7 level starts from 34,022 EGP per month.
  • Medical coverage for employee and eligible dependents.
  • Variety of leave entitlements, including but not limited to 30 days annual leaves per year and parental leave.
