Org. Setting and Reporting Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors,analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N.Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.

Under the supervision of the Director of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the overall guidance of the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, leads the organization of the Sendai Framework Mid-Term Review process.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

SENDAI FRAMEWORK MTR PROCESS - Leads and coordinates the process for the Sendai Framework Mid-Term review (MTR). Develops the MTR roadmap including the substantive and political aspects as well as the processes involved and the overall timeline. Leads substantive preparations by designing focused kick-off questions, input-studies and input-reports on different topics as defined with senior management. - In consultation and close collaboration with relevant branches, sections or offices, develops guidance and coordinates processes for national, regional and thematic consultations, as well as e-consultations; focus themes, events and host partners identification. •Prepares regular briefings on the MTR process to the UNDRR Support Group, individual member states, UNDRR donors, UN interagency coordination mechanisms and groups of stakeholders. - Leads, in close collaboration with UNDRR New York Liaison Office, the formal process through the General Assembly including the development of the 2020-2023 General Assembly Resolutions and the dedicated Modality Resolution, the endorsement by the General Assembly of the NY-negotiated political declaration and the development of the substantive recommendations through the 2023 Secretary-General’s report. - Leads the preparation of the substantive report to be presented to the General Assembly. - Develops a communication strategy for the MTR process, in collaboration with the Communication, Advocacy and Knowledge Management Section, including a dedicated webspace. Manages contents for all communications related to the MTR process.

OTHER GENERAL DUTIES - Contributes to the planning of the Front Office and carries out the work plan under his/her responsibility, determining priorities, and allocating resources for the completion of outputs and their timely delivery; ensures that the outputs produced meet high-quality standards and support relevant UNDRR mandates. - Manages, guides, and develops staff and/or interns under his/her supervision. - Actively promotes a positive team culture recognizing innovation, agility, learning, accountability and transparency. •May perform other duties as required by the Director or the SRSG.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in international relations, social sciences, sustainable development or related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in disaster risk reduction, climate change or sustainable development is required. At least five years of experience working on intergovernmental processes with international organizations is required. Experience in the development/preparation of substantive reports through large consultative processes involving multiple stakeholders is required. Experience working on the development and the process leading to the adoption of international agreements on disaster risk reduction such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction is desirable. Experience developing organization-wide strategies and initiatives and representing the organization is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
