Reviewed and developed 2 technical thematic briefs on human rights and UNODC mandates. Provided legal expertise and review substantive input to the thematic briefs and provided an updated version of the briefs Reviewed and provided substantive and legal expertise to the UNODC guide for staff on human rights Participated in strategic coordination meetings to provide specialized and technical knowledge on human rights.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Drug Control and Crime Prevention Officer, and in close consultation with relevant substantive officers within UNODC, the individual contractor will:
  • Develop thematic briefs on the work of UNODC and human rights.
  • Coordinate input from various substantive officers within UNODC, and convene technical internal meetings as required.
  • Undertake legal technical research and mapping exercises to identify existing tools and resources within the UN system, as well as UNODC that supports mainstreaming human rights and leaving no one behind.
  • Contribute to the development of e-learning modules on human rights and the work of UNODC.

Qualifications/special skills

• An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in human rights law, is required. A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • At least 10 years of professional experience in the area of crime prevention and criminal justice and rule of law issues is required. • Experience in legal analysis and working on human rights related issues is required. • Experience in writing or editing legal documents for the United Nations, preferably on topics related to the mandates of UNODC, is desirable. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills is required. • Capacity to work independently and with minimal supervision is desirable.

Languages

• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations Secretariat language is an advantage.
