Result of Service

The Senior Contractor's work and contributions will result in the successful planning and delivery of a civil society conference to be attended by 1500 people, held on 9 and 10 May in Kenya. The contractor's work will result in the running of the conference itself; the production and dissemination of a comprehensive monitoring report outlining the conference's impact; and the convening of awareness raising events across the UN-system and amongst relevant stakeholders highlighting the conference's outcomes. This will be done through briefings and Townhalls and other information-sharing mediums

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located within the team that manages the Civil Society Unit in the NGO Relations, Advocacy and Special Events Section, Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications. The position will help manage the planning, programming and organizing of a large-scale United Nations Civil Society Conference to be held in May 2024. The conference will be organized with UN Specialized Agencies, and Programmes and civil society stakeholders, will feed into the UN 2024 Summit of the Future and offer a space for multi-stakeholder interaction and civil society participation in the Summit planning process and will aid in the negotiations for the Pact for the Future. It will serve towards achieving the 2030 Agenda, including the Sustainable Development Goals. Within delegated authority, the Senior Conference Coordinator will be responsible for the following duties as it relates to the planning and organizing of the United Nations Civil Society Conference: Provide active support for the coordination of both planning sub-committee meetings (including action plans and follow-up items), and the coordination of sub-committee members. In consultation with the Department of Global Communication and other collaborators, help create and adhere to the timeline of activities within deadlines and budgetary allocations. Lead in drafting Talking Points and Remarks for relevant Senior UN officials as well as letters of invitation, description of panels, correspondence, and thank you letters to speakers, etc. for the Conference; Help lead in promoting the Conference, its proceedings and outcomes, including developing social and multimedia and press strategy and the creation of communication, informational products and branding and documentation for the Conference; Provide active support for organizing, promoting and ensuring inclusive participation at the conference; Liaise with representatives of Member States, civil society representatives and focal points of other partners (including UN Information Centres, UN Hubs, and UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes); Support the drafting of conference outcome documents and prepare the Conference Report; Liaise with the Evaluation and Communications Research Unit (ECRU) in the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) in preparing, distributing and analyzing the conference survey and results; Perform any other duties, as required

Qualifications/special skills

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Direct experience working with international NGOs and conference planning is required. Experience managing a large-scale global convening or conference for civil society stakeholders is required. Experience drafting high-level meeting outcome reports for multilateral international organisations is desirable. Relevant experience within the UN Common System or other international organisation is desirable. Experience working with external stakeholders in government and/or the civil society community is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is desirable.
