Duties and Responsibilities Organizational Setting

UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate and affordable housing for all. It works with organizations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society and the private sector, to help build, manage, plan and finance sustainable urban development.

UN-Habitat seeks to engage all citizens, especially those sometimes most marginalized socially and economically: children, youth, women and the disabled. Through the Human Rights and Social Inclusion Unit, policies and programmes are developed and supported across the agency to assure that no one and no space is left behind. Events such as the World Urban Forum provide collaborative venues through which UN-Habitat convenes stakeholders to advance and scale up these programmes.

The Senior Advisor on Social Inclusion will work out of the HRSI to facilitate and develop socially inclusive projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer, Human Rights and Social Inclusion unit, the Senior Advisor consultant will undertake the following duties and responsibilities in the duty station of Nairobi:

1. Provide technical advice on the design and implementation of normative and operational programmes advancing social inclusion across the organization and with partners and member states.

2. Act as an advisor to various strategic events such as the World Urban Forum (June) in issues of social inclusion, working with the WUF Advisory Committee and senior management, as well as the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

3. Provide technical advice on the development of the constituent assemblies (women, children & youth, disabilities) and roundtables.

Qualifications/special skills Bachelor’s degree preferably in: Project Management, Sociology, International Development, Political Science or Social Sciences is required At least 7 years of relevant working experience in the field of Project Management is required

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English Language is required. Knowledge of French is a desirable.
