Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Strategic Engagement and Policy Integration Branch of the Financing for Sustainable Development Office in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The Senior Adviser/Principal Economic Affairs Officer will contribute to the implementation of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda in accordance to the mandate of Subprogramme 9, in particular in the area of private investment by forging a greater collaboration with private sector investors. The incumbent of this post will follow the directives of the Chief of Branch and the Director of the Office. The guidelines are to support the advancement of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda. The deviation on the substantive work will occur to adapt to external shocks such as health crisis, armed conflicts and any other factors that will affect the way investors make decisions on how to allocate their funds and portfolios.

Responsibilities Within the delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Engage with GISD Alliance members and other private sector actors to set up the substantive and advisory agenda. Meets regularly with private sector representatives at a high level to discuss the GISD Alliance work programme. Ensures alignment of the GISD work programme with key priorities identified by UN Member States and the Secretary-General, including those outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, and Our Common Agenda.
  • Act as a focal point for the GISD Alliance engagement and outreach efforts at a senior level, including with international policy making bodies, regulators, standard setters and the wider business sector. Act as a focal point for other UN agencies supporting the GISD Alliance. Fosters communication among staff in the Branch and across organizational boundaries related to sustainable investment.
  • Monitors, studies and analyzes the trends and best practices on sustainable finance and prepares policy advisory notes to inform strategic planning and implementation of the GISD Alliance on the scaling of private investment for sustainable development, including on frontier and emerging issues, and how the GISD Alliance can take action. Reviews and provides substantive comments of the drafts prepared by others; recommends actions to the Chief of Branch.
  • Coordinates and prepares meetings, seminars, etc. on substantive issues related to financing for sustainable development in particular on sustainable investment. Participates in international, regional or national meetings and provides substantive expertise on an issue, or holds substantive and organizational discussions with representatives of other institutions.
  • Advises the Chief in the coordination of the GISD Alliance team and guides its work planning. Interacts with donors and prepares budgets and project documents.

Education An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in economics, finance, public administration or related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in international finance, international development or related field is required.

Experience in sustainable finance is required.

Experience in working with the private sector is required.

Experience in macroeconomics is required

Experience in developing partnerships with donors is desirable.

Experience in policy advice at the global level is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
