Background

This position is located within the UN Women Department of Management and Administration, Office of the Security & Safety Services Section. The Security and Safety Communications Consultant reports directly to the UN Women Global Security Advisor. The role will be primarily completed from UN Women HQ with no requirement to travel.

Duties and Responsibilities

In line with the UN Women Security and Safety Services Biannual Work Plan (BWP), organizational setting and available resources; the Security and Safety Communications Consultant will review and develop the security and safety podcast initiative series, they will lead the execution and analyse the impact. The consultant will coordinate efforts within the UN Security Management System and UN Women programme division initiatives.

Deliverables:

The Security and Safety Communications Consultant whilst ensuring the continued promulgation of the UN Women mandate, will be responsible for the following:

I. Mainstreaming Security and Safety through an inclusive Podcast Series

The Consultant will liaise with all appropriate internal units, divisions and sections and external partners, utilizing all available mediums and will coordinate the completion of the below:

  • Research security and safety related topics and work collaboratively with the Security and Safety Services Team to establish communication priorities.
  • Produce podcast episode outlines and storyboard of individual episodes.
  • Lead editorial planning, production and strategy for Security and Safety Podcast Series.
  • Identify security and safety specialists as potential guests and conducts pre-interviews.
  • Prepare the script for the host narrative.
  • Independently conduct interviews.
  • Edit and lightly mix episodes.
  • Oversee the coordination, uploading and publishing of completed podcast episodes.
  • Analyse podcast data and provide information via a feedback loop to the Security and Safety Services on the growth and impact of the podcast series on mainstreaming of Security and Safety throughout UN Women.

II. Developing Security and Safety communications campaign

The Consultant will liaise with all appropriate units, divisions, and sections internally, utilizing all available mediums and will coordinate the completion of the below:

  • Coordinate new podcast marketing efforts as needed, including the creation of visual assets for platform and media pitches, newsletter strategy, podcast conversion to app, and audience development planning with support of marketing and webpage design.

III. Update of the UN Women Security and Safety Services Section Intranet portal, to reflect the Security and Safety Podcast Series and content as a part of Security and Safety Mainstreaming

The Consultant will liaise with all appropriate units, divisions and sections internally, utilizing all available mediums and will coordinate the completion of the below:

  • Update Intranet portal to reflect Security and Safety Podcast Series and content, upload episodes, presentations, graphics, multimedia materials etc.

IV. Coordination with the UN Security Management System

  • Coordinate with the UN Security Management System representatives and partners to utilize the podcast series to further increase security and safety awareness across the UN-wide system and prioritize a gender inclusive approach.
  • Monitor, assess, and identify solutions of possible improvements of communications regarding security and safety.

All deliverables will be completed concurrently within a 3-month time-frame.

Competencies

  • Professionalism: operational knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to security and safety communications; knowledge of the already established UN Women concept and format is an advantage.
  • Management: ability to identify issues, analyse and participate in the resolution of obstacles that may impede the roll-out strategy. Has the ability to conduct data collection using various methods, apply judgment in the context of assignments given, plan work and manage conflicting priorities. Shows pride in work and achievements, just persistence and overcomes challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.
  • Communication: possesses excellent communication skills spoken and written, including the ability to draft/edit in a clear concise style. Has in-depth experience with making presentations including multimedia materials, videos, graphics, drafting official documents and intranet development.
  • Planning and organizing: is able to plan and organize work to meet imposed deadlines, conflicting priorities, changes in focus; working under pressure, using resources and time efficiently to ensure the completion of deliverables. Must demonstrate the ability to work independently.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

University degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree) in security risk management, international relations or media/communications, security information management, political science, social sciences or related field. A knowledge of the United Nations Security Management System is an asset.

Work Experience

A minimum of one year of progressively responsible professional experience in security, safety, political science, international relations, communications, or related field.

Languages

For the post advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.
