Background

UNDP promotes sustainable development to help build resilient nations and to empower people to build better lives. As the UN's development network, UNDP has drawn on world-wide experience for nearly four decades to assist China both in developing solutions to its own ongoing development challenges including multi-dimensional poverty as well as energy & environment. In UNDP’s Country Programme Document 2021-2025, UNDP positions itself as a policy advisor to support China’s reform.

At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change. The new SDGs, and the broader sustainability agenda, address the root causes of poverty and the universal need for development that works for all people. China has been taking active actions to implement the SDGs, and has issued its National Plan on Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and also the “Development Plan of China’s Innovation Demonstration Zones for the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, which are the most concrete actions on localizing the SDGs so far.

UNDP has been working closely with the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) amongst other partners to implement these initiatives together, serving as the SDGs expert and development partner to central and local governments, help identify local development bottlenecks, pilot sustainable solutions, work with public and private sector partners, to actively localize the Sustainable Development Goals in China. The UNDP China Country Office is moving forward with the SDG localization umbrella project together with several local projects. The SDG Localization Intern will have the opportunities to work with local and central government, think tanks, and other UN agencies. This internship position will offer valuable exposure to projects and research focused on carbon neutrality, high-quality development, and sustainable industry development in China under the scope of the SDG.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under supervision of the Programme Manager for SDG Localization, the intern will work with counterparts to assist the development and implementation of SDG localization projects and support research work.

Core Responsibilities:

• Assist SDG Localization project development and implementation, including contracting, conducting due diligence, and other logistic support;
• Support research and assist the translation, editing and publication of UNDP knowledge products;
• Attend and provide administrative support to project/programme partner meetings, prepare meeting minutes and related documents;
• Any other emerging tasks as required.

• Demonstrated knowledge of the SDGs.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree or above in relevant majors such as economics, management, statistics, and development studies.

Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:

• Enrolled in a Master's or in a PhD programme
• In the final year of a Bachelor’s programme;
• Or within one year after graduation from a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme,
• Or be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program

Language and Skills

• Knowledge and a proficient user of Microsoft Office productivity tools;
• Some familiarity with data processing software and coding ability in an asset.

INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS

• Interns must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan and medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. Any cost arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern.
• The stipend will be paid monthly. Interns will have 1.5 days of leave per month.
• Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed; Cost and arrangement for travel, visas, passports, accommodations and living expenses are the responsibility of the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or the intern.
• Interns must not apply for or be appointed to a position that should be encumbered by a staff number during the period of their internship. Interns are expected to fulfil the terms of their internships. Therefore, the internship must not be foreshortened for the purposes of allowing an intern to apply for a position.
• Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
