PURPOSE OF POSITION

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), is the cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) and is based in Lyon, France.

Under the direct supervision of head of Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology “ENV” unit and overall guidance of IARC director, the incumbent will coordinate with internal and external counterparts including partners at low income countries to assist in articulating a program on environmental and lifestyle-related cancer epidemiology for both primary and secondary/tertiary prevention with a focus on low income countries.

The position will assist in developing a program on environmental and lifestyle-related cancer epidemiology with a focus on low income countries.

The position will allow ENV unit to achieve its IARC Medium-Term Strategic Objectives and will give an opportunity to the incumbent to build up a career in environmental and lifestyle-related cancer epidemiology.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  1. Develop study protocols for investigating environmental or lifestyle-related cancer risks in low income countries.
  2. Identify major environmental or lifestyle-related cancer problems to be studied with practical relevance for cancer prevention.
  3. Establish a list of local collaborators at the low-income countries’ level and build up a professional network that will facilitate the study.
  4. Assist in designing relevant exposure assessment tools for the respective research question to assess exposure information with high accuracy, validity and reliability.
  5. Write relevant grant proposals to support cancer studies in low income countries.
  6. Assist in preparation, launch and monitoring of the studies related to environmental pollutants or specific lifestyle factors for cancer risk and/or cancer survival in low income countries.
  7. Assist in analysis of other ongoing studies in ENV unit to develop the scientific manuscript writing skills.

COVID-19 MEASURES

Due to the evolving situation resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, and depending on work requirements, this position may be partly occupied remotely, from the home of the candidate selected in the region Lyon, according to the teleworking clause for force majeure currently in force as part of the IARC teleworking policy during this pandemic period.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Essential: PhD in Epidemiology, or any other closely related discipline from a WHED accredited /recognized institution.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • At least one year of post-doctoral experience in cancer epidemiology.
  • Experience using statistical analysis packages for epidemiological research (e.g., R, Stata)
  • Proven hands-on experience in environmental contaminants or lifestyle factors of particular relevance in low income countries.

USE OF LANGUAGE SKILLS

Excellent knowledge of English is essential.

SKILLS

Essential:

  • Expert theoretical and practical epidemiology research analytical skills using statistical techniques.
  • Effective communication with internal and external counterparts.
  • Proven ability to draft scientific manuscripts.
  • Familiarity with donor relations and the preparation of grant applications/agreements.
  • Knowledge on environmental contaminants.
  • Mastery knowledge of statistical software such as Stata, R, etc.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 38,172 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1,329 per month for the duty station indicated above (subject to change). Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
