OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The major focus of the Genetic Epidemiology Group (GEP), within the Section of Genetics (GEN), is to coordinate and lead epidemiological studies of genetic and circulating biomarkers for a specific group of cancers, and produce findings that will help to elucidate their underlying causes, as well as contribute to risk prediction and early detection. To achieve this, the GEP Group coordinates large-scale international consortia of case-control and cohort epidemiological studies.

Note******: Start date for this position is normally set for as soon as possible. However, in light of the evolving Covid-19 situation (notably in terms of confinement and travel restrictions), the start date of the position may be impacted until such date that the successful candidate be able to physically report for duty in Lyon, France.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Key duties of the incumbent include:

1) Support the Supervisor in coordinating a major consortia-based project focusing on the risk of multiple cancers and opioid use, notably:

a. Contributing to the development of study-protocols.

b. In the context of consortium meetings and phone conferences, develop the scientific agenda and material to present study progress and results.

c. Assisting the supervisor in liaising with internal and external collaborators to establish necessary agreements and preparation of study databases.

d. Working with technical staff to monitor progress and accuracy of samples and data collected, and organization of study databases.

e. Analysis of large datasets and presentation of results to the study group.

2) Support the Supervisor in analysis of two large datasets concerning case series of lung and renal cancer, namely the analysis of large datasets and presentation of results to the study group.

3) Preparation of grant progress reports and scientific manuscripts and presentation of scientific results at international conferences.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential:

PhD (or equivalent, for example MD/MPH or MD who is a PhD candidate) related to cancer epidemiology or related discipline.

Experience

Essential:

- At least one year of pre- or post-doctoral experience of conducting cancer related studies.

- Experience in the conduct of cohort epidemiological studies.

Desirable:

- Experience in fieldwork in cancer related studies.

- Experience in coordination of cancer related studies in low or middle income settings.

- Experience related to research on opium and/or opioid use and cancer risks.

Skills

- Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of cancer epidemiology.

- Knowledge of the conduct and analysis of cohort studies related to cancer.

- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external partners.

- Proven ability to draft scientific manuscripts and familiarity with the preparation of grant applications.

REMUNERATION

IARC salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The fixed remuneration for the above position comprises an annual net salary plus a post adjustment which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station.

Total fixed remuneration for this position currently amounts to USD 57950 (i.e. approximately EUR 47600) per annum which is the sum of: 1) annual net salary of USD 37460 at Level P1 of the UN professional salary scale, plus 2) post adjustment for Lyon, France currently amounting to an annualized figure of USD 20490.

The fixed remuneration is expressed net of income tax but before deduction of the employee share of contributions for mandatory participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund and in the Organization’s private insurance plans covering health, accident, illness and disability.

Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave and allowances for dependent family members.

Subject to certain conditions, under temporary appointment, internationally-recruited staff may also be entitled to relocation travel & shipment, settling-in grant upon appointment and/or education grant for dependent children.

Employment status is that of international civil servant.
