OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The goals of the Prevention and Implementation Group (PRI) are to evaluate new preventive strategies, with particular emphasis on the use of new technologies, including molecular markers; to engage in research on methods to implement existing strategies taking into account the social, economic and cultural differences; to collaborate with decision makers to implement already available preventive interventions against cancer, particularly in developing countries where the need is highest and to foster technology transfer and generate educational processes for clinicians, public health decision makers and the public, to make sure the available technology is put in place where it is mostly needed.

The creation of this temporary position is in response to the need of implementation research to accelerate cervical cancer elimination, by studying barriers and facilitators to implement cervical screening under HPV-and-treat schemes in places with limited or difficult access to care. This position will be focused on analysing these implementation factors and on ensuring completion of recruitment and follow-up of women screened in the Cervical Screening and Treatment Algorithms (CESTA) studies in Senegal and South Africa, particularly of women living with HIV (WLHIV). Note: Start date for this position is normally set for as soon as possible. However, in light of the evolving Covid-19 situation (notably in terms of confinement and travel restrictions), the start date of the position may be impacted until such date that the successful candidate be able to physically report for duty in Lyon, France.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Key duties of the incumbent include:

1) Support and assist the supervisor in coordinating the multicentric CESTA study, in establishing networks among investigators to further explore factors associated to implementation of HPV-and-treat cervical screening approaches, and in completing one-year follow-up of recruited women both in Senegal and South Africa including opening of new study centres to extend recruitment of WLHIV in South Africa:

a) Contribute to the development of protocols, questionnaires, and training material for local collaborators

b) Liaise with local investigators and other project stakeholders involved in the establishment of networks that could support implementation of HPV-and-treat cervical screening

c) Liaise with collaborators to establish necessary agreements, organize sample shipments, and preparation of study databases

d) Monitor the progress of data collected using a dedicated study database, and perform site visits for training on field activities and supportive supervision

e) Prepare project progress reports periodically

f) Analyse the database and prepare drafts of scientific manuscripts

g) Present the scientific results at international conferences

2) Contribute to the design, planning, and/or carry out of other studies relevant to PRI objectives. This includes contributing to the writing of scientific manuscripts or reports and to the writing of grant proposals to attract funding from competitive sources.

In view of the above-mentioned duties, the incumbent is expected to undertake duty travel estimated at 3-4 weeks of duty travel in total per year.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential:

Master’s degree (or higher) in Statistics for Social Sciences, Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Information Management or other closely related discipline.

Desirable:

- PhD degree in a related discipline already obtained or in process

- Training in epidemiology

Experience

Essential:

At least one years’ experience in coordinating field epidemiological studies in cancer prevention and implementation; this prior experience should have involved tasks at both technical and administrative levels and the monitoring of scientific data collection processes.

Desirable:

Experience in one or more of the following areas: cancer epidemiology, implementation research for cancer prevention, onsite training and/or monitoring of data collection processes in LMICs.

Skills

- Knowledge in the conduct of field epidemiological studies, particularly, those studying implementation research outcomes

- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external collaborators

- Familiarity with the preparation of grant applications and the drafting of scientific manuscripts

REMUNERATION

IARC salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The fixed remuneration for the above position comprises an annual net salary plus a post adjustment which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station.

Total fixed remuneration for this position currently amounts to USD 56150 (i.e. approximately EUR 47800) per annum which is the sum of: 1) annual net salary of USD 37460 at Level P1 of the UN professional salary scale, plus 2) post adjustment for Lyon, France currently amounting to an annualized figure of USD 18690.

The fixed remuneration is expressed net of income tax but before deduction of the employee share of contributions for mandatory participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund and in the Organization’s private insurance plans covering health, accident, illness and disability.

Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave and allowances for dependent family members.

Subject to certain conditions, under temporary appointment, internationally-recruited staff may also be entitled to relocation travel & shipment, settling-in grant upon appointment and/or education grant for dependent children.

Employment status is that of international civil servant.
