This post is in the Gender and Safeguards Unit (GSU), Policy and Programme division, in UNEP at its Headquarters, Nairobi, Kenya. The GSU is mandated with the development and implementation of the UNEP’s Environmental, Social and Sustainability Framework (ESSF) – “UNEP’s Safeguards Policy” – which is designed to strengthen the organizational commitment to mainstream environmental and social safeguards and sustainability in its Policy, Programme and Projects. The Safeguards Officer reports to the Safeguards Advisor. The primary role of the Safeguards Adviser is to promote and oversee compliance with and risk management of the ESSF.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Safeguards Advisor or her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV will:

Support operationalization and implementation of the UNEP’s ESSF (Safeguards Policy) by:

Communicating ESSF principles and operational logics and modalities on safeguards integration through website, help desk, guidance note, face-to-face conversations with UNEP colleagues Suggesting ideas for addressing challenges around the operationalization and implementation of the ESSF Supporting creation and revision of the safeguard tools and support the development of an online system critical for the ESSF implementation Reviewing projects, conducting safeguard consultation and communicating with UNEP project managers and partners Supporting the coordination of the Safeguard Advisory group through proactive communication on meeting agenda, key discussion points and follow-up Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
