This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

This UNV assignment is part of UNICEF programming initiative to ensure safeguarding standards, risks and mitigation measures are integrated in all projects and programmes, in order to: prevent and, whenever not possible, minimize and manage any risk of harm on people and environment – arising from UNICEF staff, partners and work; contribute to improving children’s and communities’ living conditions through projects and programmes. The duty station is in Sana'a and 50% of the time on the field.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Programme Specialist – Environmental Safeguarding or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Safeguarding Junior Officer will:

•Support the Safeguarding Unit in ensuring the compliance of the World Bank funded project and of UNICEF programmes with safeguarding standards, risks and mitigation measures, by: •Assisting in the elaboration/update, implementation, and monitoring of the requested environmental and social safeguarding instruments; •Assisting in preparing the safeguarding reports; •Assisting in the organization of consultation sessions at community level; •Contributing to the follow up on the Complaint and Feedback Mechanism and incident reporting; •Contributing to the organization and facilitation of capacity building and pre-post assessments for UNICEF staff; •Contributing to the organization and facilitation of capacity building and pre-post assessments for implementing partners and other involved third parties; •Conducting field visits to the projects’ sites and report on the findings; •Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

•Support the Safeguarding Unit in mainstreaming safeguarding standards, risks, and measures within UNICEF (building of an organizational culture), by: •Contributing to the finalization of the Greening Committee workplan for 2023; •Contributing to the implementation of the activities included in the Greening Committee workplan for 2023; •Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

climate change, carbon footprint reduction, occupational health and safety, social behavioral change, community engagement, gender; • Excellent oral and written skills in both English and Arabic; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Desirable: valid national driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 over rough terrain; (if not applicable, delete) • Sound security awareness; • Available to spend 50% of the time on the field, mainly for project monitoring and capacity building purposes; • Motivated to contribute towards peace and development and to serve others; • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. This position is based in Sana'a (50% of the time on the field). National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. National UN Volunteers are expected to be culturally sensitive and adjust to the prevailing culture and traditions.
