This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

Description of task

Under the overall guidance of the Head of the Governance and Stabilization Unit, and the direct supervision of the Programme Analyst Governance & Rule of Law Unit, the International UN Youth Volunteer will contribute, in conjunction with other staff, to the programmatic development and implementation of the various projects in the programme portfolio. Her/his responsibilities will include, but not limited to the following:

  • Engage with national stakeholders, implementing partners, legal practitioners, traditional leaders and civil society organisations on a regular basis on the implementation of project activities to promote peace building initiatives and rule of law interventions;
  • Provide hands on technical support to improve and/or establish mechanisms which institutionalise rule of law, access to justice, human rights awareness and customary and statutory mediation/conflict resolution mechanisms;
  • Coordinate in conjunction with other partners the delivery of legal aid services, especially building the capacity of community paralegals, justice and confidence centres, private lawyers, CSOs, allied educational institutions etc.;
  • Support the coordination, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of project activities;
  • Coordinate and monitor the activities of the rule of law programme in assigned areas;
  • Conduct field trips in order to assess needs and identify entry points for rule of law interventions in those states;
  • Ensure the integration of the project with other UNDP initiatives;
  • Submit in a timely manner, weekly, monthly and other regular project reports and situation reports;
  • Perform any other additional duties as requested by the Unit; and
  • As part of the UNV assignment in Sudan:

  • Advocate and participate in activities directed towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Sudan; and

  • Promote volunteering and volunteerism and join efforts of UNV in this respect.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Education: Bachelor's degree in international public law, international human rights law, community development, local governance, economics, finance, sociology, social development, social anthropology, business administration, or any related field.

Required experience:

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in the field of rule of law, human rights, justice reforms, security sector reform, community security, training on legal and judiciary, human rights commissions, gender justice, gender based violence, gender and relevant areas, is an asset and previous experience with a multilateral or international organization including NGOs and previous experience in working with the public sector is an asset.
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

UN Youth Volunteers should be between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. This assignment is funded by the Government of Finland, therefore only Finnish nationals are eligible to apply.
