This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Chief Technical Advisor/Programme Manager (CTA/PM), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the CTA/PM in providing technical assistance to stakeholders in improving or establishing mechanisms for access to justice, including statutory and traditional conflict-resolution mechanisms;
  • Support the capacity of state institutions to identify access to justice issues, to monitor trends in human rights violations, and to advocate for enhanced access to justice and the protection of human rights;
  • Support state institutions to develop cases management systems relying on a harmonized approach;
  • Support the development of normative framework of an independent legal aid board;
  • Support NGOs, community organizations, traditional authorities and vulnerable groups to assist with the development of community solutions for the protection of individual’s rights;
  • Identify and support initiatives for providing legal assistance such as the expansion of community-based NGOs, legal aid centers and support community mobilisers to advise victims, detainees, and families of abducted children, and provide basic legal aid services;
  • Work with local NGOs or community-based organizations to achieve the objectives of the Rule of Law program
  • Provide Capacity support to NGOs regarding the development, implementation and reporting on projects implemented om behalf of UNDP
  • Assist with monitoring and evaluation of rule of law programmes and initiatives supported by UNDP;
  • Identify opportunities for cooperation and work in a collaborative manner with national and international partners;
  • Report on the Rule of Law programme activities;
  • Assist the Chief Technical Advisor/Project Manager with program activities as required; and,
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Degree in law, human rights, political science, international development or other related social sciences.

Required experience:

48 Months

Experience remark:

    • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in law and support to civil society;
    • Relevant working experience in human rights or rule of law, particularly direct experience working with the Judiciary, Ministry of Justice, or Public Interest Organizations focused on justice, legal rights, legal aid and assistance, gender justice or related fields;

    • Experience working with civil society and grassroots community organizations;

    • Experience in capacity building;
    • Experience in development programming and training highly desirable.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
