UNICEF Office of Research - Innocenti (OoR) undertakes high-quality research that contributes to UNICEF’s strategic goals to improve the lives of children globally. The Office’s Social & Economic Policy (SEP) team welcomes applications from people who are interested to work as consultants on research activities in one or more of the following work streams:

1. Research on, and impact evaluation, of cash transfers and other social protection interventions on children in low- and middle-income countries. 2. Research on strengthening of social protection systems. 3. Research on public finance for children. 4. Research on multidimensional child poverty. 5. Comparative analysis of child well-being in high-income countries. 6. Other research on social and economic policy issues affecting children

Instructions for applicants We welcome applications from candidates globally. You can apply using the link in this portal and will need to:

1. Complete the standard online application form 2. Attach a CV (no photographs) 3. Attach a covering letter

The covering letter should be no more than two pages, and must include the following information which should be clearly stated at the start of the letter:

1. Workstreams (one or more of the six workstreams listed above) for which you wish to be considered and in which you already have substantial expertise. Please ensure that you meet the essential criteria for workstreams that you choose (see attachment below). 2. Expertise: Either (a) qualitative and/or (b) quantitative. 3. Work modality: Either (a) medium-term contract (for 6 to 11.5 months usually full-time) and/or (b) shorter or more flexible consultancies. 4. Location: (a) Florence office and/or (b) Remote working. 5. Earliest date and periods of availability for work. 6. All-inclusive daily rate (professional fees, travel to the duty station (if applicable), health insurance, etc.,)). (please include the above information in the letter as well as in the application form).

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.

Additional information:

  • Contracts will subject to UNICEF General Conditions of Contract for Services Consultants
  • Consultants who are based in Florence will need a valid permit of stay in Italy.
  • The Office of Research is not able to cover travel expenses to take on the assignment.
  • The work may include incidental travel to participate in field work, workshops or conferences; such travel will be governed by UNICEF travel policies for consultants.
