Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Strategy, Planning, Resources and Effectiveness Division (SPRED) of UN Women integrates corporate strategy, resources and performance measurement to improve decision-making in order to manage for results while increasing transparency and accountability to its Governing Bodies and Stakeholders. The Division formulates corporate strategies aligned to the corporate objectives, ensures internal controls and risk management are fully in place, and that resources from all sources align to budget plans and the organization priorities. The Division ensures coherent and integrated strategic analysis, planning and budgeting across UN Women while providing advice to senior management and governing bodies as necessary.

The UN Women Risk Management Framework was developed as part of a corporate wide initiative to proactively support the organization’s goals and protect its reputation. Risk Management provides a framework for identifying events or circumstances relevant to the organization's objectives (risks and opportunities), assessing them in terms of likelihood and impact, determining a response strategy, and monitoring progress. By identifying and proactively addressing risks and opportunities, the organization is able create and sustain value for its stakeholders.

The Risk Management Support Intern will be primarily responsible in aggregating and disaggregating risk management data for reporting purposes, carrying out research to support the quality assurance process (looking at internal and external factors that impact on UN Women’s risk taxonomy, as well as assisting with risk management activities, administrative tasks and activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Data compilation and communication: accessing the database for annual risk assessments and fraud risk assessments in order to provide disaggregated and aggregated data on a regional basis, the outputs of which will be used for reporting purposes.
  • Support efforts to ensure that risk data and information clearly represents the risk profiles of risk entities, while making use of internal and external sources of data and information to support the quality assurance reviews of risk registers.
  • Assist in the development and/or rolling out of guidance and knowledge management to ensure that risk management capacity is enhanced. This may include the creation of short videos and graphics to enhance awareness.
  • Assist in visualizing data and preparing presentation materials where required.

Most importantly, the Risk Management Support Intern will learn about UN Women’s risk management framework, policies and procedures, as a tool for improving the risk culture and integrity of the organization.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: Law, Business Administration/Management, Economics or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation, or Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
