Result of Service

Report with review of current information on the impact of hostilities in Ukraine on urban bat populations, as well as challenges for bat rehabilitation during the war. The report shall include recommendations on possible mitigation and compensation measures. The report should be written in English and translated to Ukrainian. It should contain at least 30 pages (with photos and figures). Following topics must be covered: 1. Current situation with conservation of urban bats in Ukrainian cities and smaller settlements. 2.Description of the damage done by hostilities and possible impact on bat populations 3. Possible mitigation and compensation measures recommended for the post-war period

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats came into force in 1994 and until now a total of 38 out of 63 range states have acceded to the Agreement.

The Agreement was set up under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, which recognises that endangered migratory species can be properly protected only if activities are carried out over the entire migratory range of the species.

The Bat Agreement aims to protect all 55 European bat species through legislation, education, conservation measures and international co-operation with Agreement members and with those who have not yet joined. The Agreement provides a framework of co-operation for the conservation of bats throughout Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East. The candidate should review the consequences of war for urban bats in Ukraine and develop recommendations for mitigation, restoration and compensation for damage from military actions. Build a team of experts from different cities in Ukraine, obtain their contributions and collate the final report in English and Ukrainian.

Qualifications/special skills

PhD or equivalent academic degree in biology At least 5 years of proven experience in bat research and rehabilitation in Ukraine Expertise in writing scientific papers in English Experience in compiling reviews in English Publications in the field of bat conservation are required

Additional Information

Fluency in Ukrainian and English are essentials, German is an asset.
