Job description

The Systemic Issues Division at the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s Research Department seeks a dynamic and highly motivated Research Officer with strong quantitative and analytical skills. The candidate is expected to start in the summer of 2024. The position is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in economic research before going into a Ph D program.

The selected candidate will work on a range of international/macro-focused projects (e.g., sovereign debt surges, fiscal policy, international trade and supply chain issues, and capital-account policies). S/he will demonstrate excellent data management and analysis skills as well as advanced understanding of macroeconomics and finance. The RO should already have or be able to quickly develop the ability to work with the various commonly-used sources of financial information and data used in the IMF, as well as to perform advanced statistical and modeling work.

Qualifications

· A Master’s degree in economics, finance, statistics, math, or computer science, or a related field; or a university degree, supplemented by a minimum of six years of relevant professional experience. The Research Officer must possess exemplary data management, programming, and organizational skills

· Advanced understanding of macroeconomics and finance, sound knowledge of statistics and econometrics, and ability to apply the models and techniques in practice;

· Exceptional analytical skills and proficiency in data management and statistical programming (preference will be given to applicants with an outstanding academic record and significant experience in data analysis and modelling using software such as Python, Julia, Stata, R, SAS, and Matlab);

· Familiarity with standard sources of economic and financial information and data, such as Worldscope, SNL, Orbis, Haver, FitchConnect, Datastream, Capital IQ, and Bloomberg;

· Strong communication skills and ability to multi-task and work under minimal supervision;

· Enthusiasm and attention to detail, and initiative and drive to find creative solutions.
